Commercial Description:
A Belgian ’saison-style’ ale brewed with cocoa powder and chili pepper? Ay, Caramba! Score another first for the unpredictable brewery that was the first -- and so far the only - brewery to make ales out of dandelions and mushrooms, among other things.

Pizza Port Belgian Beer Fest. Pour from a 750mL. Subdued light mushroom malt aroma. Yeast amber cloud, with rim of white. Flabor is a weak dry nut roast on a plain wheat husky. Very flat favor-profile with some lazy hops and an over-rubbered ester amongst bean salts. Not interesting and a big let down. Chocolate not to be found except for some extant milk notes. Middle of the road really, even as Goldings looks to make some balance. Blah.

Bottle from Cracked Kettle, recommendation of Iep. Murky orange body with little, fuzzy head. Nose of orange and chili pepper. Taste of oranges, orange peel. Quite spicy with the chilies in full effect. Chocolate taste much more subdued - too bad - but can taste it a bit later in. Smooth and spicy.

750 ml. bottle form Green’s on Ponce De Leon. I am so happy they had this at Green’s. I tried this about a year ago and never rated it. Anyways, this beer has a light orange and dark brown appearance. Translucent copper color; this beer looks fantastic. There is a thin head sitting on top. This is what I want my Saison to look like. I am picking up a light spice and VERY subtle cocoa aroma. The afore mentioned aromas mix well with a nice light fruity, citrus, and sour aroma. Orange and lemon aromas are easily identified. I don’t understand why this is ranked so low? Quite possibly because the beer tastes like a wet dump. Cocoa and spice are noticed in the flavor, but I do get this nice sour lemon and orange citrus flavor. Well, I guess there is a subtle spice, but not much. I just love that subtle sour zing that I get. Again, why the low scores? Not overly carbonated. Damn, this is a fine offering from Fantome.

Bottle from nearbeer. Thanks! Poured a clear medium orange color. The head was thin and short lived. Very odd aroma. Not particularly attractive. Kind of cleaning solution-ish. The saison is under there somewhere with some chocolate and perfume. Light to medium bodied and delicately sweet. There was a bit of white wine vinegar in the flavor that was oddly married to distinct cocoa and green bell pepper. No appreciable chili pepper heat.

On tap at its birthplace. Courtesy of a fellow traveler from a small town near Leuven merci mon ami! Slightly hazy, multi-colored golden brown, large white head, good lacing. Aroma of pepper and malt. Taste is sweet from start to finish, hint of cocoa toward the middle, and no detectable hops. Interesting.

this was about a year old when opened. hazy yellow orange with no head. aroma is light and fruity with some barn yard funk to it. drinks crisp and tart with wet hay, light fruits, barn must. no chocolate anywhere probably due to age.
