Commercial Description:
Looking forward to a depressing holiday? Here is liquid consolation. This 8% bittersweet chocolate stout is the best you could hope for in these dark times. Come to think of it, considering how bad you’ve been this year, this little coal-black gem is more than you deserve for Christmas. Concocted by the vastly talented -- though, frankly, a little too cheery -- Peter Scholey, Lump of Coal will be hitting shelves and better pubs in November 2004.

Nice cinnamon, brown sugar, and fig aroma. Clear ruby brown, thin beige head, some lacing. Well balanced coffee and blackberry flavor, alcohol evident. Charcoal, bark, and grass finish.

Bottle @ Liva, Kolding. Pours black with a small brown head on top. Nose and flavor has lots of roasted coffee. Cold coffee, fresh coffee bean like. Smooth and medium palate and carbonation. Very pleasant and drinkable.

Bottled. Pours very dark brown, slightly ruby. Thin, light beige head is quite creamy and it has some lace. The aroma starts sweet, chocolatey, moderately roasted, slightly bready and raisiny. Later on it developes darker, bittersweet chocolate, a hint of tar and licorice. Some alcohol warmt in the finish. Taste is malty, sweetish and chocolaety and strong. Bitterness from the hops is quite light but sourness of chocolate beans and light roastedness balance the sweetness just enough. The palate is full bodied, low carbonated, ejoyably thick and oily. Good, strong stout with just enough character to maintain your interest and yet easy enough for relaxed sipping.

Interesting holiday stout that is a little too bitter and a bit lacking for a holiday stout. A good one to try once, and then forget about.

Bottle. Poured very dark with small simmered head. Dark chocolate aroma. Bittersweet with a thin malt body and bitter sugars. Some alcohol warming but seemed thin and low carbonation.

Poured ruby black with no foam; aroma of roasted malt with hints of chocolate; feels a bit thin with practically no carbonation; flavor about the same as nose with notes of salty licorice; no bitterness.

Bottled (The Life Before Man Session) A black beer with a very short lived tan head. A silky smooth sweetish stout with lovely licorice notes and nice fruit in the nose. An oily texture with sweet fruit and more licorice. Very easy to drink and very tasty and a good example of the style.

Impressive three-finger head with some lasting time; great ring lace. Dark brown (as opposed to black) color--some light passes through. Lots of yeast in the smell; very mild dark malt aroma; no hop. First sip, I notice how thin this beer is for a stout. Strong alcoholic warmth. I’d describe it as a porter, but it doesn’t have the chocolate notes. While it does have some of the black patent flavors, it isn’t bitter enough This is an easy to drink stout--perhaps a good introduction to the big boys.
