| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 23, 2006 Thick, muddy chocolate brown pour, opaque indeed, with a light tan sawdust spectacular forming a partial oily layer as the head, along with a thin galaxy wrung along the outskirts of the snifter. Dark chocolate, espresso, alcohol and bourbon are front and aromatically centered. Singed oak casks, Tollhouse morsels, milky vanilla crème, and dark chocolate devouring hot, peppered caramel nougats. Consequential wafts bridge the nose to mouth - brown sugar-saturated cookie dough, black malts and cinder being the most prolific.
Thick, heavy, waxy, oily wonder. When the palate delight is able to be pushed to the side for a moment, we’re in the midst of bourbon, French roast espresso grinds, caramel and Madagascar vanilla seeping into flame scorched oak. The hot alcohol tosses off the tongue. Vibrant bakers chocolate echoes all around us, spurring Dove dark chocolates in ample supply. A smite burn furrows on the undersides of the tongue. Mild carbonation and a little hot, and if there’s the patience and supply, it’ll age beautifully. Finish is amped-up with double strength greasy espresso drippings onto a pool of bourbon, ash and dark, unrefined chocolate. Bless this barrel-aged beer.

One of the best (imperial) stouts one will have the privilege of drinking; copious coffee malt, jet black pour, lingering and brutal on the palate, outstanding all around. Cheers! randy1301 (47), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 16, 2010 2009 batch on tap at the Brewpub. Deep rich brown in a snifter glass with a thin tan head. Aroma was huge coffee, bourbon, vanilla, roasted malt, chocolate, all kinds of dark rich alcohol smells. The bourbon came through but did not overwhelm. Flavor was similar. A lot of coffee notes, some good bourbon kick, some vanilla from the oak and a fair bit of roasted malt and chocolate. This beer just would not quit. A little heavy on the alcohol presence, but nothing to intimidating. Wonderful beer. elgiacomo (157), Chickamauga, Georgia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 15, 2010 12oz bottled Feb 18, 2010. Served cool room temperature into a Duvel tulip. Pours black, quite thick with a one finger brown head that reduces to a small foamy ring and cap, leaves some spots of lacing. Aroma is heavy on the wood, nice amount of bourbon, vanilla, strong coffee, some chocolate, a little charred. Flavor brings in a very good dose of dark chocolate and coffee bitterness, vanilla, bourbon, fair amount of alcohol, especially early in the glass. Mouthfeel is full, but not overly so, feels like there is oatmeal here, does get a tad sticky, low carbonation. Overall, for a coffee stout, any coffee influence is generally overshadowed by the charred oak and bourbon. Still excellent impression overall, for my first ever KBS. Never thought I’d see this on store shelves in Georgia, and it’s quite a treat. Every single Founders beer I’ve had has blown me away. This one had the most hype, but lives up to it in every way. | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Mar 11, 2010 12oz bottle. a real thick pour.. melted chocolate appearance. the beer is pitch black with no bubbles under a small brown head. the first thing i notice is that the wood smells freshly cut. like wood chips are floating in the beer. "green" almost and not bourbon drenched. lots of vanilla. the vanilla is clearly flavor dominated(ha ha). BIG vanilla ice cream finish. very dry. silky palate. so smooth and with no abv. holy crap...founders gets big points for this. kwerikson (155), burlington, New Jersey, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 10, 2010 pours thick and dark but i could just barely see light penetrating on the pour and it produced a thin dark mocha colored head that dissipated rather quickly. the body is black with no light penetration that i can see. the aromas are fruity and roasted malty goodness. i also smell coffee, caramel, slight toffee, chocolate and vanilla with a hint of clove. it is full bodied and super creamy on the mouth. great mouthfeel with a slight burn of alcohol on the lips and tongue producing a warming effect, i taste the noted aromas but in heaven. it is really balanced and super smooth and impressive. it finishes buttery and full leaving an aftertaste to die for. really great beer, worth the money, i just wish it wasnt seasonal.
