Commercial Description:
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

not a huge fan of porters personally. this one does have a unique smoked flavor that is quite enjoyable. the bistro makes an outstanding smoked porter bbq sauce that i’m sure would be good on just about anything! yum

Has a deep mahogany brown color with a nice but quickly-dissolving cardboard brown head. A deep coffee smell. Heavy malt scent, smells almost like a stout. Smoky. Coffee taste, but with a slight sweetness at the end to counteract the bitterness. Deep dark hint of fruit, very rich. Slight chocolatey bitterness, and a slight hit of yeast. Thick and full-bodied. Lingers like a black coffee. Smooths out as it warms up. Surprisingly smooth considering how thick it is. Nice coffee thickness/taste. Nice brew.

22 oz. bottle from Bottleworks tasted blind. Pours black with great tan head and good lacing. Aroma of bacon, smoke and pine. Flavor is nice sweet vanilla with balanced bitter. Overall a bit too bitter, and too carbonated. Incredibly drinkable beer that I’ve been drinking for years.

Bottle kindly sent by Durhambeer. Pours a deep reddish black with a great head and good lace. The aroma is smoky coffee dark chocolate and some nice roastiness all complimented by a some dark berry flavors. The flavor is deep roasty coffee and a nice bitterness, the beer is just lightly smoky but very well balanced.

650 ml bottle. Black, but lets some brownish light through. Seems clear. Medium-sized light beige head that clings to the glass. Nice and rich smokey malty aroma with some roasted notes. Chocolate and hints of licorice. The smoke works really well with the otherwise rich darker malts. Relatively high carbonation level. Very nice beer.

Black pour off white head ... smell of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate .... taste of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and smokiness is evident .... finishes with a light bitterness .... oily mouthfeel .... a good porter with peat smoked malt added had it fresh on tap was a good one

[2635-20091205] Cask. Mild toasted fish cakes aroma with smoked dried meat notes. Dark dark brown body with a quick creamy light tan head. Sweet band-aid roast malt flavour has a long sweet syrup finish. Medium-full body. Fairly enjoyable, nice smoke characteristics.

22 oz. bottle. Moderately strong and complex aroma that’s primarily dark chocolate and licorice with a dark fruit element, maybe dark cherries or blackberries. Color is a deep ruby, almost black, with a inch thick, creamy, espresso-colored head that quickly subsides to a fine layer which laces thinly down the glass. I don’t know what Koch is talking about because the peat malt is unquestionably the defining character of this beer. Still, it’s not overwhelming so you can still enjoy the bittersweet chocolate malt behind it. The texture could be a bit thicker but the beer still manages to be rather creamy and soft. All in all this is a damn fine beer.

(22oz bomber - pint glass) Nearly opaque dark brown color with lasting head retention and lacing. Has a smoked malt and slighty hoppy aroma. Taste has a chocolate, coffee, smoked malt characater and an undefinable hop quality. Also has notes of vanilla, wood and butterscotch. Soft carbonation and long bitter finish.
