Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

Rating #100. Decent amber ale. Pours a hazy orangish amber, with average head. Little on the nose other than malts...maybe some vegetables? Taste is malt, caramel and some hops, but not as much as I’d like.

When I originally had this beer it was a hot tennessee day at the bonnaroo music festival and it was very refreshing and good. This time around when i had it on tap, i found it boring and dull. The malts had a bit of a dark nutty amber flavor and i just didnt taste anything to unique.

Finally had this beer. Light orange color, frothy pour. Malty aroma. Spicy (pear?) aroma? Thin body. Malty taste. Not much carbonation, long finish.

Poured from bottle. A decent nose of bread, citrus (lime and orange), and nuts. Color is a rich gold with a smooth, long-lasting head that leaves some lace. Flavor is toast with some herbal qualities; there’s also a faint edge of spice and butterscotch. Palate is a disappointment; thin and spare with very little carbonation and finish. It’s all right for a session beer.

It’s been a number of years since I first tried this brew. Time hasn’t been very kind. Now, this beer doesn’t to be very good even for an amber. Its ironic to think that New Belgium is so well known for is probably their worst beer. Oh well. It pours a very light and transparent good. Very thin looking and not very amber. Nose is of gentle toast and dried malt. Tastes is of bitter caramel. Dried brick biscuits.

On tap at McCoy’s in Beaver Creek, CO. I drank quite a bit of this on New Year’s Eve. Reddish/Amber color and very clear. Nice off-white head that lasts pretty well. Aroma and flavor are very mild. Malty and bready. Finishes mild, too. A very simple beer, much better than the big breweries and easy to drink lots of, if that’s what you’re looking for.

The beer poured light amber with fat, light tan head. The aroma was malty and caramelly with light citrus and spice notes. The flavor was light caramel and lemony notes, slightly sour. The palate was very thin and watery. Overall an OK beer but nothing exceptional, just average but drinkable.
