Commercial Description:
Labatt's brew a pale ale base to which is added the unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract. Guinness Extra Stout is brewed in Canada by Labatt under license from Arthur Guinness Son & Company. Editor's Note: It looks like Moosehead is also brewing Guinness. Bottles in the US are from there of late, but Canadian bottles are still showing Labatt. 04/23/06

This is not as good as the normal guinness and I miss the nitrogen. An odd malt sweetness really comes out of this otherwise dry stout. There is a cherry flavor in with the burnt malt, and you can actually taste the alcohol in this one (vs normal Guinness). Not as good as normal guinness or 250.

Black pour with tan head. Roasted malt scent. The taste is overdrive burned malts or something. Kinda watery. Not what I expected. On second thought, this is not very good at all to me.

I was not a fan. It had a metallic taste. Kind of watery for a stout, not very tasty. Looked good, smelled good, but it honestly didn’t deliver on anything else

Dark beer near black. Completely opaque. Chocolate and coffee malt scent. Bitter with a slight smokiness. A slightly oily mouthfeel.

Reviewed 12/24/2009 (Bottle): Pours a very dark brown red color body, big frothy light tan head, very lasting, good lacing, creamy looking. Roasty aroma. Some nuttiness, maybe almond or something. Sweet and a tiny bit dusty. Somewhat watery, somewhat creamy taste. A little astringent. Thirst quenching.

The beer has an underwhelming roasted malt nose but better than the Draught. I taste chocolate notes, rather than the more widely reported coffee flavor. I usually don’t taste chocolate in stouts, so perhaps I just have some sort of taste problem where I confuse chocolate for coffee. Maybe, I should shut up and trust myself. It also tastes of black tea, english/irish breakfast, which I had a cup of before the beer. So, I have a little more grip on that flavor at least. I don’t really like the tea flavor. It’s sort of that drinking a cup of tea on an empty stomach with a big multivitamin experience. The dryness of the beer also contributes to a general mouth pucker. The aftertaste is somewhat bitter, which I don’t mind, but a bit too dry for me for a stout. I have to try to separate feel from taste because the mouth pucker is really more of a taste issue than feel. The beer has a nice creamy carbonation, but it doesn’t really do a lot beyond that.

Dark Brown to black in appearance. Thick brownish head. Coffee and roasty flavours, some bitterness. Bottle.
