Commercial Description:
With joy and a little bit of mischief, Fantôme brewer Dany Prignon dedicates this very bitter beer to all of the many varieties of brise-bonbons - literally, ball-breakers - in the world. Specifically, this beer is meant for wise-guys, braggarts, pains-in-the-ass, muck-rakers, troublemakers, know-it-alls, stuffed-shirts, blow-hards and bores, as well as nut-cracking, wind-bag, prattling-on, self-appointed experts on everything, and nose-in-the-air snobs, convinced they can do anything better than you. Dany intended to make a beer too bitter for a normal person to enjoy. The problem is, everyone loves it! Guess we're all just a bunch of brise-bonbons sometimes...

Huge thanks to The_Beer_God for brining this one to the DC gathering. It is always fun embarking on a rating of a totally unknown beer that was also totally unexpected. The label was not much help as far as description goes as I am unsure what Sumo wrestlers taste like. Cloudy orange with a dense and lasting white head. The aroma is very fruity with tobacco, spices and citrus. The flavor is even more funky, smoky, sweet, spicy, lots of vegetable matter, a big hop kick at the end, a bit of a jumble. It reminds me abit of HotD Greg (the one brewed with squash). Dry hoppy finish that is a bit unexpected. Lots of flavors and very interesting but in the end I think that it is a little bit too chaotic.

Pours a slightly cloudy bright straw yellow with a chunky fizzy head. Aroma is very inviting, lightly fruity, delicate, chalky, eraser, lemon, bit of funk, green grass, light yeast, very bright, full and full of character. Flavor follows, very familiar, lemon, grass, chalky bitter, Belgian pale character, quite bitter in the finish, great strong but not acidic or sweet lemon character, fairly bitter, clean with tons of enjoyment, almost a minty thing going on. Medium/light bodied, great fizzy medium sharp crisp larger carbonation, clean, slightly chalky, very nice drinking. Great beer. Belgian pale meets saison.

Bottle from a trade with Boutip. The cork was wet on top and completely shredded when I was trying to pull it out. Pours slightly hazy light orange color with huge white head. Funky sour aroma. Very dry, musty flavor. Not funky or sour at all. Earthy. Very different from any Fantome I have had before. Medium body with average carbonation. Thanks Phil.

Bottle 75cl. @ The Danish Summer Gathering Tasting, TSODRBSG09.
Unclear hazy light to medium orange color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate to light light heavy yeasty, barnyard, wood, pepper, fruity, orange. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light acidic with a average to long duration, peppery - spicy. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090822]

Slightly funky straw-like aroma. Must have an older bottle, as this is not very bitter at all. It is rather tart and quite drinkable, though. Flavor reminds me uncannily of a Arnold Palmer - a blend of lemonade and iced tea.

From an undated 750ml bottle. Aromas of citrus, pine, and a little bit of horseblanket. Flavors of lemon, sour grapes, and some peat with a sour finish. The hops have faded quite a bit but it is still quite nice. A very interested beer that reminds me more of a sour ale than a saison.

Murky orange, long lasting off-white head, excellent lacing.
Aroma is yeasty, musty, lots of lemon citrus, light alcohol, flowers.
Flavour is light sweet, some peppery spice, grass, alcohol, some candy.
Warming bitter mouthfeel, medium body, med/high carb.
Finishes long, warm, bitter and dry.

Very good. Very high drinkability. Another amazing Fantome.

750ml bottle obtained in a trade with TheCheeseMan, thanks Dan.
