Small bottle, poured into their chalice . Reddish amber. Apples, berries and barely-ripe stone fruit. Fresh bread, earth, grass. Mellow. The alcohol is quite prominent but not offensively so. The carbonation is soft. The finish is persistently bitter and complex. I was ready to hate this, but I think I’ll go and get some to put away for a while.

On tap at MacNivens. Nose is full of sweet and spicey fruits like apple and peach. Poured tanslucent burnt orange with quickly fading pale head. Soft and full of spice, this beer rolls around the tongue revealing a new layer at each corner. Mostly apple with lots of cloves and possibly some nutmeg. Very interesting, as I’ve never had this style.

Tap @ MacNivens. Shiny clear red body with creamy beige head that fades. Nose is berries, cherries, figs, plums, raisins, on top of soft sweet malts. Flavor is velvety smooth malts accompanied by all fruits mentioned. Very strong with a finish that pleasantly reminds you this is in fact 10%. Very nice!

Dark prune color with a small head. Aroma is weak for a quad. SOme fruit and faint spice. Flavor is sweet and the alcohol is well hidden. Carbonation is a bit high for me. Drinkable quad.

750 ml bottle from Total Wine & More in Tustin ($9.99). Pours a clear light brown with some red mixed in. Two fingers of beige foam has good retention and lacing. Nose of fruit (cherries stand out), yeast, caramel, and spice. Taste also (somewhat strangely) has a noticeable cherry flavor along with other dark fruit, caramel, peppery spice. Not so sweet unlike some other quads. Dry finish with a little bit of alcohol in the finish. (1176, 253)

Had this in a bottle named Koning Hoeven. Pours a dark amber with a red tint and a big fluffy head. Wine like aroma with fruit, sweet malt and some spice. Nice flavor with the sweet fruits followed by a nice peppery feel and a warm burn on the throat. Finishes quite dry. Very nice after taste. Good one.

On tap at Beer Bistro in Toronto, served in a Trappist glass. Appearance is clear reddish-golden with a rocky white head. Good retention and good lacing. Aroma is sweet toasted caramel malt with perfumy hops and moderate yeast. Some clove and pepper also present. Flavour begins with honey sweetness with a hint of yeast. Spice develops through the middle, leading to a nice spicy finish. Finish is average-long. Palate is medium-full in body with a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, very fine. A very pleasant sweet and spicy ale. 2010-03-13

Excellent - banana bread flavors - nice sweetness, but not overdone - well hidden alcohol - reminds me of the overpowering malted flavor of Alpha Kong, but much more subtle to the point of being easy to drink.
