Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Poured a nice copper amber with a good head and great lacing. Nice crisp light aroma. light malt and hopps flavor with just a bit of a bitter bite at the finish. This is a very good easy drinking beer, very very good.

I used to love this beer, and at one point it may have been one of the finest American craft beers. It certainly was the best craft beer I could find back east. It is still good but there is so much more competition now. Malt and hops, sweet, with a bitter finish. Beautiful copper color, good hear.

Nice amber pour with some decent frothy head. Nice caramel malts with just a bit of spice. Nothing overwhelmingly facinating...but a very solid beer.

From the bottle

Pours a clear amber orange with an offwhite head. This one takes me back to graduate school, drinking too many bottles at too rapid a pace in some rented Palo Alto apartment. Thus it smells like beer to me on first encounter; a closer dissection of the aroma reveals malt and grain, a slight hoppy sourness, slightly nutty aromas, but nothing that leaps out. The flavor is rather the same. Again, graininess, bready malts, a decently bitter finish. Perfectly drinkable, but I drank my quota of these years ago and so its not anything I’d hurry to return to.

Bottled. No head on this, clear amber-brown body but it was the slightly stale aroma that was off-putting. Redeemed by an attractive hoppy taste with a real crunch to it.

The most noticable qualitty of this beer is its slight sweet maltiness on top of the hops and dry finish. Amber color with nice off-white head that quickly receeds to the rim. Malty aroma with hints of floral hops. The flavor leans toward an ale-like sweet fruitiness. Crisp finish. Nice carbonation. Enjoyable.
