Commercial Description:
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Pours a dark reddish-brown with medium tan head. Scent of dried fruits. Taste is sweet and strong, but not too powerful as this style sometimes is for me. Not bad.

Dark brown coloured, wih a thick head which quickly dimininishes. Full aroma, sweet, coffee, caramel. Tastes bitter, hoppy, with a hint of caramel. Long soft finish, tasty.

Served in a Gouden Carolus glass, pours a brown head that lasts all the time and leaves some lace. Red brown colour. Smells of dried fruits, burnt wood, soaked earth, toffee, molasses. Sweet flavor, not much pronounced. Taste of dried fruits, spices, with pepper, cloves and nutmeg. It could be a greater beer, I found that it lacks some more sharpness or having stronger ends on both smell and taste.

33 cl. bottle. Pours a beige head of good duration, with very attractive, curtain lacing, over a clear, reddish brown (SRM 20) body....nose heavy with dried fruits (raisin, cherry, plum) mild toffee, honey, mild molasses, also a tinge of burnt wood (campfire)....tastes initially of sweet toffee malts, then balancing fruits, again raisin and dried cherry, bit of plum, molasses, and a touch of wood balance, ends up slightly sweet....mouth feel is thick and heavy, carbonation relatively high. A lovely brew.

This is how beer is supposed to taste. Grain and yeast along with nuts, dark fruits, and an almost creamy texture. The flavour performs judo chops on your palate, moving in unexpected directions, morphing like a chamaeleon before surprising you with its next strike. Only complaints are it could be a bit more fizzy, and it doesn’t come in a 40.

Smells a bit old.. some plum and must. Pours Brown with not head at all. There was little to no carbonation to this beer... I am starting to think that this is a very old bottle. Raisins, plums, burnt sugar and some nuttiness...

Very dark strong ale with a small tanned head. Smells of caramel candy. Taste is of nuts, smoke and oak. Very deep flavor with an almost overwhelming palate that keeps changing. Really enjoyable beer.
