Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Bottle from Utobeer, drunk at home with tashi, 19th March 09. Deepish amber, quite carbonated. Surprisingly hoppy. Very drinkable and rather under-rated looking at the scores here. A refreshing English-esque beer that you can quaff all day.

The beer pours a very clear yellow with a white head. The aroma is corn and wheat. Very macro like. The aroma is corn with some very light hops, wheat and possibly some light skunking. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Anchor makes some great beers but this is not one of them.

Bottle from Total Wine in Naples, FL. I have been wanting to try this for awhile and kept passing it by for more exciting beers. Pours golden with a fluffy white head and lively carbonation. Faint aroma of pale malts. Light bodied with average carbonation, and perhaps on the prickly side. Flavor of toffee and biscuit countered by spicy hops, but very thin in flavor intensity. This was probably an old bottle because I picked up distracting isovaleric notes. To sum it up, it tastes like mediocre overcarbonated bitter.

On draft at Pizza Port Carlsbad (Carlsbad, CA): Pours a light orange color topped with a thick, white head. Light nose of watery malts, grassy hops, and some light ginger spice. Low carbonation, medium to light-bodied. Flavors of watered down malts with a light bitterness towards the finish. Definitely my lowest Anchor rating. Drinkability: Bland and commercial. Pairing: House salad. Rebuy: No. #329 on 09032010, DG.

22 oz bottle. Good news it’s cheap, and abv is low so you could drink a few if needed. The bad news is I wouldn’t want to drink much of it at all. Golden amber with white head. Nose is yeasty, lightly sweet with a light lager like bitterness. Kinda skunky. Taste is about the same as all listed. Light pungency, light fruity sweetness. Not good. Thing cross between Heineken and Budweiser.

Orange/gold pour, nice white head. Barely any aroma. A watery malt and caramel smell barely escapes the glass. Flavor is watery as hell. I am guessing this would only be good on a hot as hell day when you just finished mowing the lawn. Meh.
