Commercial Description:
For those of you who don’t know, this beer has a story behind it. I’m a bike nut and I’ve always wanted to name a beer after the Cannibal, partly because I think it’s a cool name for a beer and partly because he’s one of my heroes. The Cannibal by the way is Eddy Merckx, a Belgian who raced in the 60s and 70s and whom many consider the greatest cyclist in history. He’s kind of the the Pele or Babe Ruth of cycling. He was called the Cannibal because he was said to devour his opponents. Basically if you were in a race and Eddy Merckx showed up you were now racing for second place. So we made this strong Belgian beer in tribute to a strong Belgian rider. We also brewed it in celebration of the Tour De France and the bike club Iron Hill founded. This beer always goes on tap on the first day of the Tour and stays on tap through the Champs de L’elysee. We also save a keg that we break out every year at our thank you party for the organizers of the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium. So this beer is pretty steeped in cycling culture.

750ml bottle via trade with Swolf3, thanks again Steven. poured a hazy yellow, white head. Lemony aroma too it. Citrus acidity in the flavor almost like a fruit beer. Very light tasting for 8.5%, an ok beer.

Big ol’ corked bottle from Iron Hill, Lancaster (thanks Pa!)...golden-amber pour, sudsy white head...sweet malt aroma, some spice...flavor was somewhat sweet, bready, sugar cane, some spice...not a big fan (yet) of Belgian Ale’s, but this was pretty good.

Pours a hazy straw-gold into the glass, with an initial 4-finger fizzy head that diminishes to a respectable cap, leaving soapy window-wash lace. A melon-citrus nose, with hints at plantain, and tons of spices. The flavors contain some yeasty sours, melony citrus that concentrates on "limon" (lemon-lime crossbreed), and finishes on pie spices with a hint of alcohol and tiny pine resin. It doesn’t feel quite as complex as I’ve described, with a medium embodiment and soft carbonation that leaves an underdeveloped mouthfeel.... not quite flat, but a tad uninteresting. All-in-all, it has all of the characteristics of a BSA, but top-tier offerings seem to integrate all of the facets a little better.

750ml from Iron Hill, Media. Pours and smells much like a biere de garde, a bold gold with some amber at the edges. Moderate carbonation, and a very fruity nose. Body is moderate, a bit oily. The taste is bready and a bit washed out, with some light fruits surviving and only a trace of hops. Still, the finish is wicked dry, almost too much so. Not bad, but nothing I’d hunt down again.

Bottle, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing! Pours a clear dark gold-amber with a white head. Sharp aroma, of pine, grass, lemon, yeast, dried fruit. Sharp taste, of pine, malt, caramel, and grass. Lingering pine sharpness. Nice.

Decent beer. Not as good as the other Belgians they offer. I paid twenty bucks for the bomber and feel it’s a huge rip-off., thus the low rating. If it was half the price, I’d put it about a 3.6 or so.
