Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle thanks to doubleo. Pours fairly clear copper with frothy white. Huge pine/citrus nose. Flavor is all pine with back notes of grapefruit. Nice bit of sweetness that tries to round it out, but who cares, this a well made hopped up IPA!

Bottle courtesy Doboy, shared with my brother.Clear gold with a smalish off white head. Huge grapefruit aroma with lots of pine resin build on a base of toffee and honey. Medium body and carbonation, quite resinous as expected, very dry palate. Fleeting malt sweetness gives way to an assertive bitterness that extends into a lengthy dry finish. This is one big, bad IPA.

Impressive! Hazy amber color with a white soapy head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, and hops. Flavor of pine, hops, grapefruit-just exceptionally well-balanced.

1/7/09 notes: bomber, shared with Derek. Pours yellow-orange with a medium white head. Aroma features prominent notes of apricot, tart grapefruit, lime. Flavor is bold, emphasizing herbs and tangy citrus (especially grapefruit). Palate stays buttery throughout, with a smooth finish. Reminiscent of eating delicate lotus flowers. This is an amazing IPA.

650 mL from Southbay. HOLY $%@$!.Pours a clear, light amber with a two-finger, creamy, off-white head. Good retention and lacing. Okay lacing. Aroma is huge fresh grapefruit, tangerine, peaches and cream ice cream, huge butterscotch, caramel. Taste is fresh, citrusy, wet hops with butterscotch and a massive bitterness permeating throughout. Buttery, creamy on the palate that leaves a sort of oily mouthfeel. Wow.

22 oz bottle via Lagunitasfan (big big thanks!!). Pours an almost clear amber with an average white head. Nose is floral hop goodness. Taste is all about the floral/perfumy hops. A nice IPA with a big in your face hop profile, but not one i am crazy about.
