Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Fresh from the brewery. It’s a heavy looking brass color with a stiff layer of white head. The initial aroma is pure citrus and hop but a more detailed scent of grapefruit and fresh pine will shine through. The flavor is a strong delivery of citrus and piney hops with just the lightest dabble of grainy malt. This ipa sure does pack a punch which makes me wonder what the alcohol percent is. Also, I didn’t think this Sculpin IPA was very far off from Ballast Point’s el Dorado double IPA. I think the logo of this sculpin ipa was real cool too.

Pours a translucent golden amber with a medium frothy off white head that left lacing. Aroma of fresh citrusy hops, tons of orange, pine, grapefruit, pineapple, dough and light caramel. Love the orange coming across...so fresh and hoppy! Flavor of grapefruit, pine needles, loads of hop bitterness and flavor. Just a touch of some malt to balance.

On tap at Mountain Sun’s durring their Hop Havrest Month. This is a great IPA with all of the charachteristics I like. Great citrus aroma, ton’s of hop flavor and a nice bitter finish that keeps the taste lingering. Ballast Point has really improved their beers over the years.

Tap @ O’Brien’s. Pours clear orange-gold with a spongey white head. Great floral hoppy aroma with lemon and oranges. Clean, bold hop taste throughout. Good amount of grapefruit with tangerine, pine without resiny stickiness, and maybe a little pepper. Bittersweet malt in the finish without being overbearing. It has the hop bite and taste of an Imperial, but the body of a regualr IPA. Excellent.

Bomber bottle and served in my GI IPA tulip, THANKS JON for the bottle:

Pours a clean coppery golden hue with a small but lasting frothy head which left very nice clinging lace upon the glassware. The aroma has a bountiful amount of tropical and piney hops along with some sweey bready malts and a hint of hop spice. The taste is nicely balanced between crisp citric hops and mild pale and caramel malting. The finish displays a light spicy note and some metallic tones. The mouth feel is sprite and crisp, very refreshing and drinkable. Yet another winning IPA from the SoCal area. Mikey Likey, get ya some before they are all gone.

Golden/amber with a frothy white head. Resiny floral aroma. Excellent IPA flavor. Great sweet/bitter balance. Malts are in the backseat with the hops driving, but the malt keeps the hops in check without being an anooying backseat driver. Quite like this one.

Bottle courtesy of Stefanje. Pours like a pale pilsner with a one finger head. HUGE appetizing aroma of herb, wood, citrus, and earthy hops. Beautiful grapefruit fresh hop flavor, with a somewhat light easy drinking mouth feel. Hell of an IPA.
