Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.

A Scottish stout with a wonderful rich dark colour. A smooth full bodied beer with subtle bitterness giving way to late sweetness and underlying roast barley hints.

Only ratings of the cask version should be entered here. The bottled version has a separate entry.

Very deep, dark brown colour. Big coffee aroma. Some burnt malt. Less on the flavour but still creamy coffee, becoming a bit sweet towards the finish. A good stout slightly compromised by the late sweetness. Cask (gravity dispense), Ealing Beer Festival 2005.

Poured a pitch black liquid with a small light brown foam. Weak smell of chocolate, coffee and something burned. Similar taste but also some dark bread. Smooth mouthfeel with a thick body and low bitterness.

Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm. Pours out in an almost black colour with ruby edges. Rounded aroma of coffee, roasted malts and cocoa-powder. Medium-bodied with notes of black currant, roasted malts and cold coffee. Medium-bitter finish of roasted malts, nuts and cocoa-powder.

Cask conditioned handpump Royal Blenheim Oxford. A black beer with a slight off-white coloured head and lacing. The aroma has some light roasty notes. Sweet roasty and fruity in the mouth. Good depth with a little treacle. A tasty beer.

Cask - West Gate Inn (JDW), Canterbury. Dark, dark brown with a fine, loose and frothy beige head. No lacing, but quite thick and greasy on the glass. Milk chocolate and roasted malt aromas. Milk chocolate and roasted malt again, flavour-wise, with some liquorice, dried fruit and a dry, toastiness. Low carbonation, relatively short but dry finish with a mildly oily mouthfeel and quite a thin body for a stout. Seemed more like a porter to me.
