Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Recent canned batches of this have been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Harboe.
The first batch of this beer destined for export to the US market was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway in 2006. Later batches have been brewed at Ølfabrikken.
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar. Unpasteurized and unfiltered like all our beers of course.

This is actually a Baltic porter according to the label. This is powerful stuff. I had this after a long day of yardwork in the hot sun, thinking a porter wouldn’t be too hard on my palate. I was wrong. The aroma is of wood, chocolate, molasses, syrup, prunes, dates, fig. It pours very dark brown with a dark brown head. Sweet, slightly alchoholic flavor of burnt sugar, chocolate, dark fruit, and roasted malt. Very creamy mouthfeel. Tastes potent and concentrated. Very heavy like an impy stout. It has a woody bitter finish. A very flavorful and complex beer that pushes the envelope for the style.

A: The pour is nearly black with an initially fluffy tan head which dies down to a nice layer on top of the beer. S: The nose has some excellent roasted malt and coffee aromas which go along nicely with some molasses, dark chocolate, and perhaps even a touch of dark fruit. T: The flavor offers up a nice contrast of mildly sweet and bitter chocolate along with coffee, roasted malt, and then some more roast for good measure. M: The body is medium to full with a fairly low level of carbonation and a bitterness on the finish. D: An excellent porter and very representative of its style. I’m glad to have tried this one and would definitely do so again.

Dark brown, almost black pour with a mocha colored head, great retention and attractive lace. Definitely one of the best looking porters I’ve ever seen. Hopefully the rest of the beer follows through! Aroma consists of dark chocolate, dark fruit, graham cracker, roasted nuts and smoke. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with just a hint of carbonation peeking through on the front palate. Mild bitterness, just enough to keep this one from being cloying... it’s perfectly balanced. Almost undetectable alcohol warmth. A solid beer, overall, definitely worth the high rating.

Incredibly dark brown head settles to a thick, creamy film over an equally impressively dark and dense inky black/brown body. Looks and smells luscious. Aroma is powerful in sweetness and alcohol. Rich chocolate syrup, thick cookie-like malt, green-wood smokiness and hints of dark fruit drowned in a potent punch of Malibu rum. Thick on the palate, soothing on the throat, ending with a slight chalkiness. Wonderful full flavor, intensely chocolatey but not overly sweet... and the alcohol is not as overbearing as I’d expected by the nose. A pleasant burnt bitterness of well-roasted malt reveals in the finish, and the finish lasts a long time. As my glass slowly empties, I detect a slight taste of pencil shavings but that’s really the only thing that detracts from a simply incredible beer. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Cellared for about 2 years, purchased at West Lakeview Liquors, Chicago, IL.

A dark brown to black beer with a great cocoa looking head. The aroma was smoky, nutty, & kind of smells like a liquid candy bar. The taste had coffee, chocolate, caramel, nutty, smoky roast, & tasted like a candy bar with a creamy mouthfeel. This really tastes like a candy bar with caramel & nuts only liquified.

500mL at ChurchKey. This porter overall is a huge slap in your face- rather than being sweet, mellow, and chocolate milkshake- it is bitter, spicy, smoky, and robust. It pours a clear very deep ruby red with a fantastic rocky brown head that leaves very sticky lacing. Lots of yeast chunks in there. Aroma is beef smokehouse, campfire, burnt cherries, burnt wood. Taste is massive unsweetened chocolate, baker’s chocolate, and light alcohol in the finish. Similar to Founders porter, which I love.

Powerful, tasty stuff. Ridiculously luscious dark chocolate notes along with coffee beans and some very good dark fruity notes. Drinks more like an elite stout than a standard Porter, but with little alcohol heat. Wish we got this here in Florida, it is fantastic stuff. edited: The head is absolutely gorgeous on this beer, a wonderful milky chocolate that is amongst the prettiest I’ve ever seen.

On tap. Pours black with small tan head; smooth roasted aroma with distinct chocolate notes; quite full-bodied with relatively low carbonation; slightly bitter, roasted barley flavor with chocolate and licorice notes, the latter coming evident when swallowing.
