Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Recent canned batches of this have been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Harboe.
The first batch of this beer destined for export to the US market was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway in 2006. Later batches have been brewed at Ølfabrikken.
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar. Unpasteurized and unfiltered like all our beers of course.

Poured a dark brown / mahogany color with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, and vanilla beans. Taste of chocolate malts, some bitter roastiness, dried fruits, and light alcohol as well.

Absolutely pitch black with a thin, tan head. Somehow this smells like both sweet and bitter malt. A little woody. Bone-crushing dry malt flavor. Lots of earth, leather, smoke, chocolate and a pinch o’ coffee. Mother of god is this a great porter!

Bottle, shared with Ian having returned home from the Ratebeerian day around Oxford 09-02-08 A Big, big thanks to Ian (Harrisoni) for this beer Pours dark brown with a beige head amazing aroma of coffee and milk chocolate, oh but the taste is simply stunning, I’m looking at the rest of my notes taken after the end of a day’s drinking in Oxford and what a load of bollocks I started writing (not for the first time, I hasten to add) "I’m in St Marks Square, Vienna (think I meant Venice) looking across towards the cathedral" I’ve never been there what was I on??? Was it the coffee notes making me think this?? Anyway back to normality, It was simply stunning, silky chocolate, lovely creaminess my notes have run out it was great cheers Ian

500mL, counterpressure filled bottle from Jacob Lovenlund shared with OldGrowth and SuIIy on 4/9/06
Served from a wine glass well-chilled to start.
Wow, this aroma is like a caged animal. As soon as the cap comes off (actually before the cap comes off, as the beer was so well carbonated, it leaked) mounds of black chocolate, French roast coffee, dates, raisins, toffee and fudge pour forth. Cascade hops linger heavily in the background providing a leafy, citric backdrop. Another hop variety may be in there too, giving it a juicy, almost wintergreen and resin-like note. The hops just slightly offset the deep, cakey chocolate, while the dry, coffee-like roastiness imparted by the roasted barley fills the senses vividly. Maris otter adds that earthy, almost salty English toffee-like flavor. Incredible amount going on in the aroma, which dosent seem cluttered, importantly. Coffee, roast, hints of earthy smoke and leafy, juicy, flavorful hops keep a terrific balance. I sat and sniffed the beer for a good while before trying it.
The appearance is perfect, simply put. Huge tan head is immaculately retained for the entirety of the glass, being dense, creamy and full of lacing. Black, unfiltered body is opaque with only a light crimson tinge on the edge when held to the light.
The flavor is just shockingly reserved, elegant and importantly, not overdone. While this is a bit thicker of body than your typical porter, it is not some uber-hopped, hot, cloying mess of a beer. Quite the opposite. Vanilla and chocolate come to the front, both drying the palate, while sweet creamy milk-chocolate malts fill in the edges of the palate. Coffee flavor is mild, but still appreciated, as dark fruits (plums, prunes, raisins) enliven things and the tight, but well utilized carbonation forces the husky roasted barley dryness through to the end, where a symphony of deep, subtle hops, chewy, earthy, salty maris otter malt and soft fudginess all meld in to one satisfying finish. Texture, as I have made mention of throughout, is supportive, substantial, mostly chewy, but never heavy or sluggish. Tight carbonation sees to that. No sign of alcohol anywhere in aroma or flavor.
I was so skeptical of this, thinking it would just be an over-the-top, Americanized "Porter", (aka an American Imperial Stout or Imperial Porter) but it is not. Sure, it’s pretty hefty, but the dryness from the roast and chocolate malt, and the fruitiness, help keep it down to earth. As well, the unpasteurized nature gives it a really homely feel. Could session with this easily. Fullers London Porter eat your heart out.

(500ml bottle) Purchased through the Bieropholie Private Imports. Pours a gorgeous, cream brown head and an opaque body. Nose of intense soya sauce, molasses and cold coffee. The flavour is somewhat unbalanced - much like Sam Adams Triple Bock - I don’t know if this needs to age (its only 7.5%) as the taste is too ripe. It almost has a salty, iodine overtone to with the flavours of molasses and coffee in the finish. A decent beer all in all but overly praised for its uniqueness when there are numerous of this robustness.

500 ml bottle an opaque brownish black with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of coffee, bitter chocolate, light licorice, light vanilla and a hint of dark fruit. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of bitter chocolate, coffee, roastiness, light licorice and a faint hint of dark fruit with a smooth lingering roasty bitter finish.
A very tasty porter!
