Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

2003 bottling. Big aroma of hops wafted out of the glass. Medium copper, OK head that faded. Medium bodied, lighter than I prefer for the style. Some undefined malt flavors, overwhelmed by an agressive hoppiness. Undefined fruit flavors as well. Nothing really sticks out in this beer. Almost would call it an American Strong Ale rather than a barley wine. Having said all this, it isn't bad at all.

[12 oz. bottle - 2004 vintage] Clear copper pour with a very thin tan head and lots of carbonation. Light and sweet aroma of malt with some floral notes. Very sweet and fruity flavor with hints of sherry at the beginning that goes to a very thick malty middle and a sweet and chewy finish. The aftertaste is very sweet with lots of alcohol.

2005 bottle tasted with Terry on 10/10/2006... Color is clear dark copper. Mild carbonation with an ivory crown. Aroma is mostly citrus and alcohol. Flavor is mostly DME, some hints of caramel or something darker, and alcohol. Finish is dry and metallic. Body is thin and fizzy. We initially tasted this back in EARLY 2006 and were disappointed. We thought some age might help, but I think we might have taken a few steps back. This beer is really blah and not memorable except for being the only Brooklyn Brewery beer that I don’t like and cannot recommend. I really like the Brooklyn brews, but this one has to be the most disappointing... 12 oz bottle (2005, 11% alcohol).

2003 bottle. Pours a garnet/copper with a thin head that turns wispy and clings at the edges to my goblet. Aromas of Edgar's Amontillado, apple cider, banana, chewed chicklets, and malt whiskey. Taste is unintriguing up front: malty at first like a lager with some bready sweetness. Hops enter in the middle with a fruit blossom essensce. The back is surprisingly bitter, but completely welcome. Mouthfeel is more creamy than it is cloying or sticky-sweet, that is until the end when the body drops out and finishes a bit light. The alcohol comes in late, too, I thought; but overall it is nicely warming and ample for the style.

An average Barley Wine. Quite alcoholic and strong. Not very well-balanced. Lacks some more diversity in the flavour. However a nice and warming beer.

Bottle 2003: Pours a transparent amber with a small 1cm quickly dissipating white head. Aroma is acidic with a hint of roastiness. Start is slightly sweet with some citrus hops in the middle. End is bitter with noticeable ethanol heat. Aftertaste is sweet and mellow and very enticing. A very good barleywine. The aftertaste clinches this one.

355ml bottle. Foggy reddish brown body. Low greyish head. Ripe fruits , toasted dark malts and alcohol in the aroma. Taste is fairly dry malts with a strong citric/piny hopbitterness and an evident alcohol burn. Big body. Long malty-bitter finish. Rough and tasty.
