Commercial Description:
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren't afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain's Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

The main reason I attended the Ithaca brewfest, Poured Dark Golden with a slight head. Aroma was sweet citrus hops, overwhelmingly grapefruit in nature. Flavor is more intensely piney, but the citrus is present as well. A little bit of malt in the middle for a nice balance and then the end plunges into intense grapefruit. One of the most memorable at the fest.

On tap at Rattle N’ Hum in NYC. Golden pour, medium sized white head. Aroma was fairly understated for a DIPA, with notes of citrus, earth, and floral hops, along with a touch of caramel malt. Flavor was much more pronounced and very delicious, with an excellent citrus and earth backbone, along with secondary pine and floral notes. Palate was medium bodied, and had a nice balance of sweet and bitter. Really solid brew.

Goldne color (rather than copper). Prominent WHITE head persists with some lacing. Aroma of toffee and "jolly rancher" that I associate with bigger IPAs. Marmalade, orange. Full-bodied feel and nicely bitter. Surprisingly, no real sweetness like I got from Squall though, I anticipated that for some reason. Residual sweetness in the finish. A nice IPA.

Pours a really bright golden colour with a big fluffy white head. Looks clean! Aroma is filled with fresh bitter hops, some peach and lots of pine. Tiny notes of caramel can also be found. Spicy hoppy notes mixed with with a good caramell base makes this beer a pleasure to drink. Perhaps a bit to bitter, hops defintetely owns the malt in this one.

Crystal clear golden coloured body with a very dense tan head - very nice appearance! Aroma of ultra fresh-picked hops, skunk (in a good way), apricots and a pleasant bitter scent. Full-bodied; Deep pungent hop bitterness at first with a chewy mouthful and potent alcohol tastes tucked around sweetness from apricots. Aftertaste shows a lot of complexity - the hops definitely come through, some malt and a good spicey kick - nice! Overall, a good Imperial IPA - still a bit strong for me, but nice compared to others...the hops really come out nicely here! I sampled this 500 mL bottle purchased from Liquor Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 14-March-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 17-March-2010.

Bottle. Clear deep golden with a creamy off white head. The aroma is peachy hops, pine, caramel and lots of fruit. The flavour is spicy hoppy, with notes of grass, peach, pine and a great caramel punch. Full bodied. Noce hoppy spicy finish. Lovely DIPA!

13-MAR-2010, bottle @home, from "Fish & Beer". Very light in color - golden - with a very fluffy head. Why so light? I fear lack of malt. And yes, that is correct. I find that a fault in many DIPA’s (and IPA’s as well). I personally want the malt to balance the hops. This brew relies solely on the hops - and it does well, I still miss the malts. Nice nose and taste of mostly grape fruit, but also the usual grassy notes, and some flowers. Very sweet and a little sticky. It sure tastes good:-)
