Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Thoroughly enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a whiskey snifter. The beer pours a nice deep amber color to medium brown, with a lightish tan head that is moderate in size. Carbonation level is perhaps 2.5 atmospheric volumes. Strong and pleasing notes of caramel, toffee, raison, and prunes in the nose. The palate is also extremely pleasing, with a lot of the aforementioned flavors, along with some notes of brown sugar, abbey yeast esters that are pleasantly subtle, and a slight alcoholic character that adds additional complexity. Overall, excellent.

Poured from bottle. Fig, lilac, and spice on the nose; color is a light brown with very little head. Espresso, soy, salinity, and dark herbal notes on the palate, with a mild, quick-effacing carbonation. Not my favorite North Coast product by far.

Deep dark brown color with small head. Sweet roasted malts aroma, like Finnish "mämmi". Crisp fruity citrus and malty flavor with little hoppyness. Flat on palate and not much aftertaste. But very refreshing and enjoyable to drink.

Bottled. Dark mahogany pour with a moderate off-white head on it that falls fairly quick. The aroma is lighter than I was anticipating: a whisper of raisin and dried cherries. I was pretty shocked by how huge and complex the flavor is after the low aroma: lots of brown sugar/toffee, nuts, spice, rum raisin, cherry, date, and a bit of a boozy, dark fruit finish. Has a nice rich mouthfeel. Really, everything is spot on about this but the aroma.

Dark brown color, small light brown head, weak aroma, with a caramell/liqorice flavor taste.

Malty aroma, slight brownish head. Taste has a touch of bitterness, mostly floral in flavor. Not very carbonated, A good abbey ale.

Aroma is caramel, nuts, toast, dough, basement aromas. Taste is pretty much the same but sweet and rather thick. A very nice taste that unfortunately vanishes a bit too quickly.
