| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 7, 2010 Pours basically black with very little head. Not a lot of aroma, but there is roasted malt, coffee and anise. Taste is full bodied with good layers of toasted malt, coffee, anise and some hops. Palate is nice and smooth. Good, but could be more aromatic and better balanced with more hops. SM_Jenkins (14), Missouri, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 6, 2010 great beer but not exactly what I expected from Founders; more bitter than sweet, but still very balanced wxman (603), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 6, 2010 Pours an absolutely opaque midnight dark brown with a medium to small espresso-like head. Aroma is roasted malt and licorice. Rich almost astringent yet pleasant, well balanced taste of coffee, licorice, buttery sweet roasted malt and blackstrap mollasses. Alcohol is present but not to the degree 10.5% ABV would indicate. A pretty damn fine imperial stout. nimbleprop (1017), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 3, 2010 12oz bottle sampled at home pours a very deep, completely opaque, viscous, heavy looking black with a thin, ringing brown head. Aroma is very nice and complex. I felt the dark malts and grains came through exceptionally well. Some imperial stouts smell more like booze or coffee than actual beer. This smells, like dark, hearty beer. The nose is also very sweet, brown sugar, caramel, some light cinnamon, coffee with cream, a little hazelnut. The flavor is nice. Coffee, nuts, molasses, burnt toast, burnt sugar, brown sugar, cola. The mouthfeel is very thick, almost gooey and seems a little too much. There’s a strong, lasting coffee like bitterness, almost like Kahlua. It might be TOO big at 10%. I love Founders, and I wanted to love this. I thought it was good but lacked the finesse of a world class Imperial Stout. Angelmonster (35), Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 2, 2010 Pours a 2 finger dark chocolate head, body is pitch black and no light goes through. Head died kinda fast and lacing wasnt really present
Aroma is big on burnt, roasted malts. There’s also some coffee grounds, hops, and faint alcohol.
Taste is of charred oak, roasted coffee at first. Chocolate syrup comes in next and hop bitterness is present also. Alcohol is present but not too overbearing for being almost 11 percent
Mouthfeel was good. Body was thick and smooth going down. Carbonation was aggressive for the style. Head contributed nothing to the beer which was disappointing
Drinkability was good. Overall this beer is a sipper but rather complex and deserves to be savored. Disappointed that head died so fast and didnt add any creaminess. Good stout, better than KBS but would prefer the regular Breakfast Stout nwiseman (41), West Lafayette, Indiana, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 2, 2010 Bottle from VBS. Aroma is lots of dark fruits and a fair amount of alcohol. Pours almost pitch black with a deep molasses colored head (what head there was). At first taste I notice an intense malt roastiness with lots of lingering bitterness. A very full mouthfeel. Not quite what I was expecting, but still a very well crafted stout.
