Westvleteren Blond is the basic beer for the monks’ own consumption, since 1999, when the former 6° dark ale (red cap) was finally discarded, after the 4° had already gone that path.

Bottle, with thanks to bytemesis! This is a Westy I’ve been wanting to try for quite awhile, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this included in the box he sent my way. Gold pour, short-lived white head. Aroma is dusty. Faded honey, some oxidation, and orange blossom. Resonates with apple cider notes as well, but in the way that De Dolle sometimes does, not in the "flawed apple cider" way. I get the impression this has some age on it, but it’s really well-composed and distinguished. Taste is dry and dusty. Medium- body, gentle on the palate. Overall: excellent. I sure hope I make it to Belgium one of these days to find these beauties at the source.

Chris opened this treasure tonight. Let me try to express how amazing that is. This is, I believe, the only beer that (1) was on my wants list almost immediately after joining the site 10 years ago, and (2) that I still haven’t tried, and (3) I still want to try. That makes it a pretty rare bird and pretty great thing to get to drink.

Absolutely gorgeous pour, glowing gold with a small white head into...yes...a Westy chalice. The nose is dust and hay, enticing. The flavor is spectacular. It’s very dusty, just the way I love Belgian farmhouse beers, but it’s also spectacular in its intense orange rind of the sort that you get in a good tripel. But it’s got absolutely none of the sweetness of some tripels, none of the fruity esters. Instead it’s just bone dry, with a cider-like aspect that is very unusual among the 2000+ beers that I’ve had. The mouthfeel is right on the mark for weight on the tongue. Not thick and sticky, not thinner than one would like.

Sipping this I drift off into a fantasy where I’ve living in rural Belgium and this is the local equivalent of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, where you can just crack bottle and bottle and drink deep while hanging out with your friends...aaah. So nice.

Chris, thank you enormously for sharing this treasure. Unlike whatever random Scandinavian double imperial stouts and Midwestern tap-only IPAs I had on my wants list a decade ago, this one has stood the test of time.

tl;dr summary: Westy, biatches.

Butelka, spożyte w domu. Kolor złoto pomarańczowy, mętnawy, piana drobnoziarnista długo się trzyma.Po otwarciu butelki aromat cytrynowy mocno wyczuwalny. Aromaty ulatniają się intensywnie, smak cytrusów, słodu i lekki drożdżowy.Wysycenie i goryczka O.K. na średnim poziomie. Na podniebieniu owoce, banany, lekka goryczka.Wadą jest mała butelka i cena. Pięknie ułożone piwo.

Robe blonde profonde, belle mousse. Nez houblon, agrumes, levures, note maltée. Bouche à l’attaque fraîche, fruitée, minérale, bulle élégante et longue finale raffraîchissante. Une très belle bière parfaitement équilibrée.

330 ml bottle
White golden orange clear beer with big fluffly persistent head. Aroma has Belgian yeast, honey, pepper and pear peel. Flavor has belgian yeast, honey, pepper and herbs. Palate is medium full with quite mild carbonation and slight btiterness. Finish has quite mild bitterness. Aftertaste is herbal and honeyish with a bit watery feel. Pouring in the sediment makes it quite hazy and adds some sweetness and body. Nice aroma but lacks carbonation and hops.
