Commercial Description:
Lambik until the age of about 6 months (on oak casks) is considered young (Jong in Dutch) and traditionally sold as such. The difference in flavor and palate between both Jong and Oud is substantial.

Please note the age of the sample you are reviewing when entering your rating. While many factors determine whether you have had "Jonge" or "Oude" Lambik, a general rule of thumb is to enter 1 year-old or older lambik under "Girardin Oude Lambik" and anything less than 6 months-old under "Girardin Jonge Lambik".

For those between 6 and 12 months of age, you should take in to consideration the character of the lambik. Samples presenting themselves as hazy/cloudy, with some head-formation and residual sugar should be entered as "Jonge Lambik", while those that are drier, higher in clarity and with little/no head formation should be entered as "Oude Lambik".

Tumbler poured from a 10-liter plastic jug at Delices et Caprices in Brussels. (Thanks, Pierre!) And man, what a thirst-quenching treat. Dull, hazy copper color with two bubbles on top. Faint aroma of grapefruit, honey and earth. Flavor had a touch of sweetness like iced sun tea, big, dusty grapefruit backdrop. Mellow, refreshing.

Cask @ GBBF 2006. Golden coloured. Sour woody aroma. Oaky sourness to taste but enough residual sweetness.

GBBF - 2006. Draught. Woody acidic aroma. Quite soft. Vinegar with edges of balsamic sweetness. Depths of lingering shifting flavour. Very pleasant.

Draft @ De kiek, Vlezenbeek. Pours a hazy orange color with a small fast disappearing white head. Has a fruity slightly hoppy grainy aroma with some earthy hints. Fruity malty bitter hoppy flavor with some oaky hints. Has a fruity malty slightly hoppy bitter finish.

A "young" lambic. Hmmmm ... as is the case of most Girardin products, I have decidced on recent evaluation, diacetyl. I will attempt to avoid my natural disinclination toward diacetyl when evaluating this product, because, at least it wasn’t even close to being as nearly overpowering as it was in other beers.

Which is to say ... I rather liked this brew. Orange. No head. Fuinky aromas ... some -- nay, quite a bit of diacetyl -- tending toward acetylaldehyde (a definite, sour, green apple taste here). Tanins in the nose and taste -- particularly a "retronose". Leathery. Somewhat lemony, but I suspect that perception was an "influence" of nearby tasters. ;) Nice palate -- not cloying, semi-dry ... medium-full bodied. Whole = > sum o’ parts.

Cask at GBBF 2009, 4th Aug 09. Clear coppery amber. Soft, only slightly sour aroma and taste. Orangey flavour with a smooth sourness in the corners of the mouth.

On tap at the Hotel Centrum, Beersel 25/4/08. Amber coloured with no head. Tart aroma with a touch of fruit, caramel and wood. Some sweet malt came through in the flavour before the tartness returned in the finish. Different and oddly refreshing.

From the cask at GBBF, August 2006. Day 1, beer #21. Golden colour. Slight haze. Entirely flat. Some sweetness with moderate acidity although I wouldn’t call it particularly sour. Woody and citric at the same time. Less farmyard than expected in the aroma. Not fully developed yet, but getting there.
