Commercial Description:
Jolly Roger himself smoked the malt for this Imperial Stout. This is a massive stout with a huge roasted maltiness and complex smoky, chocolate flavors coming through strong thanks to the gentle handpump and correct cellar temperature.

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, roasted malts, smoke, plums, alcohol, and faint coffee. It pours a dark brown, virtually black with a small tan head. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate and roasted malt. There’s some hints of plum in the background. Lots of smoke in the finish really blends well. There’s also some light coffee, licorice, grapefruit hops, and alcohol in the finish as well. There is a slight warming affect...tastes bigger than 9%. I really like the smoky character. Full bodied with an oily mouth feel and mild carbonation.

22 oz. bottle from pepsican. Pours a dark brown to black color with a medium sized dense tan head. The aroma is deeply roasted malt with chocolate, dark fruits, licorice, hints of coffee, and a shot of alcohol. The flavor is more deeply roasted malts, chocolate and caramel for sweetness, coffee notes, licorice, dark fruits and light smoke. The alcohol shows at times. The finish has some dry bitterness which is nice. Medium-full bodied. I am glad to have the opportunity to try this.

Thanks to Maltomeal for bringing this beer. Pours a dark cocoa chocolate with a dark mocha head. Rich raisin aroma with cherry and just a touch of acetaldehyde. Rather soft palate withnot much roasted malt flavor. Lightly cooked sugars, coffee and dark pitted fruits.

Quite solid. Black, boozy, silky, chocolate-y, and smokey. A big thanks to JaBier for bringing this one back from his travels. Pours black with a small head. Aroma is dark roast, chocolate, and coffee. Flavor is same but with a significant amount of smokiness which surprised me. The smokiness is discernible, but by no means overwhelming and is quite complimentary to some other elements in the flavor. Mouthfeel is thick, slick, and persistent. A big beer, but a good one.

2008 bottle sampled Dec 15 ’09

Dark pour, almost no head. Colder, the ash and alcohol are a bit too apparent, but as it warms the chocolate - dry and dark - comes through and I start to really appreciate the beer in full.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and oily with a large dark brown head that lingered. The aroma was a divine mix of roasty malts, licorice, wood, vanilla, port and toasted marshmallow. The flavor was incredibly complex and washed over you in waves of toasty malts, port wine, cherry, toffee, vanilla, toasted marshmallow, smoke, coffee, hickory, tobacco and bourbon. Incredibly complex. Alcohol shows through but amazingly does not detract from this brew but actually enhances it. The finish is amazingly long. Smooth, thick and full bodied. Almost perfect.

Bottle purchased at the brewpub and drank a week later. Pours black with a thin light brown head. Malty and smoky aroma with some chocolate. Sweet malt flavor with smoke, chocolate, booze and a sweet chocolate finish. Pretty good now, but will probably be better in a year or so.

11/04/2009: Otto’s Jolly Roger Imperial Stout... Aroma: Dark and semi-sweet chocolate; a hint of vanilla and alcohol, licorice, and char. Appearance: VERY dark brown to nearly black in color; only a beige ring around the edges. Flavor: Chewy dark fruits and heavily malted grain; semi-sweet chocolate; chewy dried licorice; vanilla and even some dry rye bouron-like flavors. Palate: Medium-full body; smooth and slightly slick. Overall: Quite good, although the alcohol definitely pops out more as the beer warms...

1 Pt. 6 Fl. Oz. bottle shared by alexsdad06. Thanks Brad! Rating #245 for this beer.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted coffee, licorice and alcohol aroma. Heavy dry licorice bittersweet flavor with a heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.
