Commercial Description:
Cask & Bottle Conditioned, regularity unknown;
Brewed with wood smoked malt and traditional hops. An Gof Ale commemorates the blacksmith from St Keverne who led the Cornish rebillon of 1497 against Henry VII's unfair taxes. Following the defeat in London by the Kings Army An Gof was hung, drawn and quartered on Tyburn Hill. Defiant to the last he declared from the scaffold that he and his followers would share "a fame permenant and immortal".

Bottled from Tuckers Maltings. Deep amber body, deep rich malts, slight smokiness, some lush toffee flavours round the edges. A solid, competent beer.

The darkest of the Lizard ales that I tasted and probably the best, but still disgusting. Saying that this tasted of mud is doing mud a disservice.

[bottle from farm shop near Looe, Cornwall] Bottle conditioned. Looked translucent and was slightly viscous on pouring which made me slightly scared of drinking it. Initially pleasant with a lingering bitterness, but the flavour was unmemorable.

500ml bottle, Best Before 1 June 2007, at Kookfest, September 2006. Bronze colour with a slight haze and lively condition. It does have a smoky aroma, but its more ashtray than wood smoke. There’s also a moist, clammy character on the nose with some underlying toffee. Distinctly sweet on the palate with a fizzy mouthfeel. The smoky malt is better defined here and there’s a fair amount of hoppy grip on the finish resulting in a rather bittersweet feel. Interesting, but there was something about this beer I couldn’t quite put my finger on that didn’t hold together perfectly. Not quite there.

Bottle @ Kookfest. Initial earthy malts becoming slightly ashy after a while. Prickly carbonation well balanced and quite drinkable. Ends slightly sweet. Not bad.

Kook’s Farewell Bingo. Flavours mash together in an obscure, muddy manner. Some chocolate emerges in the finish, but otherwise it’s a fucking mess.

Bottle at Kook’s Leaving Do at Chris_o’s. Reddish brown. Lasting beige head. Some smoke on a rather pleasant malty aroma. Very good condition in mouth, carbonation sweetish malt and then dry finish. Prickly on end. I really like the malt on this. Dry and rich.

Bottle (Chris_o Gathering06): Nutty sweet with a touch of sherry. Dark muddy copper. Not bad!
