Drank July 18, 2007. Dark brown. Dark brown/ruby edges. Small, light tan cap. Ton of dark fruits and rich molasses, some chocolate nougat, roasty malt, light dose of cereal grain and pumpernickel, bit of resinous hops near the finish. Much more hop presence when it was fresh; more like an english, stout-influenced, barleywine now. Full body, balanced carbonation, rich. Great brew. My favorite He’Brew beer.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy/creamy, brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (roasted grain, toasted nuts, chocolate), lightly hoppy (resin), lightly yeasty (dough), with a note of alcohol, light note of anise. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Kinda ho-hum for such a big beer. Very similar to 5766.

Bottled. Beer is nearly opaque, very dark brown with a small, creamy/frothy, light brown, rapidly diminishing but mostly lasting head. Sparse, clingy specks of lace.
Smells Belgian. The aroma is malty with heavy notes of dark chocolaty roasted grain, dark-roasted coffee, light note of molasses, biscuit; Hoppy with a moderate note of herbal resin; Yeasty with a light note of doughy dank basement; Moderate miscellaneous notes of dried current, concentrated plum, trace of cola.
The flavor is heavily sweet, moderately bitter, lightly/moderately acidic with a long, warm, moderately/heavily sweet, moderately bitter, moderately acidic finish.
The body is full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is lively.
Big and rich.

Bomber. Dark brown pour with a beige, somewhat frothy head. Aroma of dark toffee and molasses with some dark dried fruit (prune, raisin), boozy notes and a dose of hops. A foundation of dark and sweet toffee/molasses malts pound up against earthy hops, with flavors of plum pudding, coffee, fig, and charred leaf underneath. Big alcohol and hop profiles combine to create a sharp black peppery finish. This might do well with some aging? Overall pretty good for a $5 strong ale bomber from the supermarket.

pours a thick almost black in color with nice lacing in the glass. smell is dark must, alcohol, and plums. taste is light for the color, malts, some coffee, more like a strong nut brown. nice beer with quite a zing.
