Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

2015 edition, thanks to Maek at Osaka bottle share. L: poured a murky off-brown with a small head. S: a big bourbon whisky nose, supported by deep rich malt and a touch of sweetness. T: again, very alcoholic, lots of whisky flavouring, a well-balanced sipper with some dark fruit and coming through. F: great mouthfeel, heavy and warming yet smooth over the palate. O: it was great to try this, pushing the style into more liqueur territory.

Firestone Walker Sucaba - bottle shared by Maek - thanks for helping me finally try this. It pours a deep reddish gold pour with a supremely malty caramel. Thebody is med-full while the flavor is oaky caramel and bready malts. This is delicious. Caramel and malts all the way.

2014 edition. Poured into a chalice on 09.22.15. A: Bourbon, oak, brown sugar, and cherry. A: Thin off white foam recedes to a ring. Hazy deep dark red body. T: Oak, bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, and cherry cough syrup dominate. Raisin and toasted coconut are subtle. All flavors are blended nicely. P: Somewhat oily with an astringent finish. O: There is a load of alcohol heat despite its age. If there was any hop profile, it’s gone now. This is a great entry point for someone who doesn’t like hoppy American style barleywines.

Bottle at THT. Dark brown with small off white head. Sweet grains and malts, some light chocolate, lots of cognac, boozy, quite spicy. Very sweet and light boozy bitter finish. Full bodied. Very alcoholic but nice.

Bottle shared with friends during poker. Lots of heavy dark fruit and chocolate. Barrel wood flavors too. I liked this a lot.

bomber to snifter poured a medium brown with smallish head. the aroma took me a minute or so to figure out and once I did I was in love with this beer. what transpired was the blend of chocolate and coconut mixed with the sweet malts that make a barley wine. the flavor was much more intense of the chocolate front and back and the mix of the coconut finishes with a soft warm boozy feeling. definite sipper in front of the fireplace.

Very balanced and extremely drinkable for a barleywine. Alcohol is present only in the aftertaste giving a warming sensation as it goes down. The barrel is very present, along with a lot of caramel and even some hops on the finish. Syrupy body, very easy to drink.

Alengrin (3548) - BELGIUM - JUL 10, 2015
UPDATED: SEP 11, 2015 Renowned American barley wine, with creamy, moussy, light greyish beige head, breaking in instants; colour hazy copper with ruby hue. Powerful and enchanting bouquet of sweet cherries soaked in brown rhum, ruby port, white pepper, vanilla, Hennessy cognac, candied figs, Belgian chocolates, candied orange, strawberry, oaky tannins, hints of mocha ice cream, caramel, almond, roasted coconut. Intense taste profile beginning with lots of candied, but not sticky sweetness, raisins, candied cherries, hint of orange, softly tingling carbo with velvety, vinous mouthfeel, noble sourish touch, smooth caramelly, slightly nutty with a lovely milk chocolate touch to it, while the initial candied sweetness lingers on; finish is a reprisal of all this, but with drying oaky woodiness added, a dash of citrussy hop bitterishness and of course a deep warmth of brandy- and bourbon-like alcohol, perhaps very slightly burning on the root of the tongue, but not disturbing at all; wonderful bittersweet, warming barley wine, not as hoppy as many other Americans in the style and therefore better suited in the English barley wine style, which, from what I read, is indeed the intention. Wonderful and exemplary for the style.
