Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

Strong wood tannic nose, some jammy raspberry too. I’m diggin’ it! Super dark brown, just a ring of a head. Hot initially, melds into a woodsy, sweet, damp and charred work of art. weighted down in body, finishes inky and almost sticky. Good times.

Pours out a really dark brown, almost black color. Nose is caramel, vanilla and some oak as well. Flavors are sweet, raisin, vanilla, and finished smoky. Medium bodied and finish last for a bit.

On pour this is an impressive deep, deep brown ale with an almost caramel colored head. The nose is massive and complex with malt, caramel, vanilla bean, campfire, hardwood, and alcohol. As it warms in the glass it becomes more complex. This ale pushes the upper edges of medium bodied. There is plenty palo santo wood on mouth with massive amounts of smoked malt. The finish is a velvet yet chewy with an almost chocolate feel.

Bottle. Deep dark brown pour with a good beige head. Smoked aroma. Tastes incredibly rich, roasty, caramel, malty, dark fruit, hint of vanilla. Quite smooth and relatively easy drinking. Tasted stronger than 12% to me!

Eventhough the comercial description does not say it, this is much like a barley wine. The sweet and figgy flavors are noticable on the nose. There is a small but noticable cabrenet flavor. Overall the sweetness overpowers the alcohol, hops, and malt flavors. This is unfortunate because dogfish head places so much care and effort in every brew. I salute the attempt, the beer is good but came off too sweet.

Draft at redlight redlight. Pours a very dark, opaque brown with a tan lacy head. The nose is very pungent with a hint of diaper. The high alcohol is very powerful. The flavor is likewise powerful. Sweet ’n sour with simultaneous notes of caramel and vanilla and soy sauce, which combined with all the other flavors does nothing to detract from the overall experience. The palo santo wood, whatever it is, gives this beer an amazing richness and makes it one of a kind. Combined with a good creamy mouthfeel and you have quite a beverage.

Raisin aroma with hints of a woodsy finish. Very dark appearance - bitter, oak taste, lasting on the palate, good finish - outstanding.
