Aroma of grain, banana, and funk/ass. Flavor had a strong band aid essence. Some banana and malty sweetness. Pretty gross; didn’t finish most of it. Aftertaste like apple juice. drewbeerme (2364), Chicago, Illinois, USA

The bartender gave several folks samples. Most of us felt like this was a banana cider. The only person who liked a lot was a lady that was usually a chardonnay drinker, not a beer drinker.
For me, it was OK at best Walt (2300), Austin, Texas, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 13, 2008 Sprecher Mbege Ale, Fire-brewed, African-style.
Label adorned with colorful parrots and bananas.
Ale brewed with banana extract.
16 ounce bottle, 5.2% abv.
Thoroughly clouded, and peach-y colored, with a slim, but sure, white layer of foam.
Flowery aroma, then sweet, then the banana takes over...slice of lemon on the side, maybe, but banana is all over this, and it’s an even, balanced, appealing aromatic, at that.
In the taste, banana, banana, banana....and little else. . Light bodied, slightly malty, with a light, faintly fruity finish. No hops here, but that would be correct to style, I’d think.
Maybe this brings me closer to tasting a true African banana beer, but I’d still like to think I can make that trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro and try some of the real stuff.
Worth the $2 I paid for the bottle. Yeah, I thnk so, it’s unique enough, the novelty is worth it just to try and say you did.

This is the alcove offered to us by Sprecher.
Pours golden hazy, no head.
Aroma of industrial glue, carton.
Taste, wood, smoke, tasted like old apple with some soap, and mouthwash.
It just doesn’t have anything appealing. While I appreciate the effort to try an African recipe, this beverage is just awful to drink.

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 7, 2007 16 oz. bottle. Pours a cloudy copper with a creamy, slightly yellow-white head. Lots of small carbonation bubbles feed the head for several minutes. The aroma is definitely bananas, but it actually smells like real bananas and not like some fake fruit candy. Some sugar and lemons also in the aroma. The bananas are in the flavor too, but the flavor isn’t as genuine as the aroma. I couldn’t decide if I liked the flavor or not, but I give Sprecher credit for trying something different and achieving moderate success.
