Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Pours a dark, hazy orange with a thick off-white head. It has a fresh aroma of bitter hops with a hint of grapefruit way in the back. Also present is a fairly strong, though not as strong as the hops, aroma of sweet, roasted malt and coffee. The beer tastes of burnt malt with a hint of floral sweetness way in the back. This beer also have an overwhelming alcohol taste. Overall, this beer just tastes too much like eating burnt toast to deserve a higher rating, and it was fairly difficult to drink it due to the alcohol taste. This is the second beer by Flying Dog I’ve had, and I’ve been disappointed in both of them.

Nice overall but a bit too sweet and raiseny for my tastes. The alcohol is quite disguised.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark mahogany almost brown with a light tan head. Aroma of citrus, pine, toffee and alcohol. The flavor is a very nice balance of bitter Pac NW hops, sweet roasty caramel malt and a very light alcohol taste. Fullish body with average carbonation and a long roasty bitter dry finish. I really like this one, the hops balance out the sweetness nicely.

Strong licorice and chocolate aroma, slight hops. Had a trial bottle(8oz) of it and the end of a long tasting night. Solid beer.

Pours hazy orange with small diminishing head with no lacing. Sweet fruity aroma with distinct malt notes and some alcohol. Full body with minimal carbonation. Taste of malt and fruit, no distinguishable hop but surprisingly bitter in taste and finish.

Draft sample at Cincy Beerfest- apparently my 4-oz. sample isn’t much smaller than the 7-oz. bottles I’ve seen this in before. Pours a cloudy red-brown color with a thin tan head. Aroma of dark fruits- cherries, plums, raisins, figs- along with caramel, candi sugar, and sweet malts. The flavor is also sweet and fruity, with all the same fruits mentioned above, sweet caramel malts, brown sugar, nuts, and grains. Medium-bodied, with gentle carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Smooth and sweet, with alcohol almost completely hidden. Really nice.

Wow! I bought this just because it was something I hadn’t sampled from my local store. Holy crap. I am blown away by this. I just finished brewing my first homebrew, smelling something totally different a honey ale with extra light notes, cascade hops, etc. So this was kind of night to my homebrew’s day. Pours a really rich ruby color. Nice very light head. Very complex aromas Hard to single out aromas as they are equal malt/hops, nothing stands out. The complexity continues to the flavors, wonderful mingling of malt, hop, sweet to bitterness. This has firmed up my thoughts that barley wine is one of my favorite cold weather beers.
