| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 4, 2010 Dark brown with a medium head and thick lace. Aromas of chocolate and coffee, a hint of smoke. The flavor is fantastic. A very smooth and balanced bitterness. More coffee flavor and lots of smoke in the finish. The smoke lingers on the palate for a while. Thirst quenching. I love it! badlizard (2550), Berkeley, California, USA

Very mild smoke notes, but a rich malty grain taste and a reasonably creamy palate. marcus (2049), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 22, 2010 On tap at Toronado. Pours black with a thin tan head and a strong treacle and smoke aroma. The smoky malt flavor is anything but subtle, however it complements the hop bitterness quite well resulting in a fine brew. SamGamgee (1629), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 9, 2009 Draught at the brewpub. This batch is 8.5%abv and reeks of smoke. I like that. Its classification as a smoked instead of a porter should have been a good indication. Like a black rauchbier. There is some roasted malt in the aroma, but pungent smoke runs the show. Chocolatey smoke flavor with a chary earthiness and a dry, roasted finish. Medium bodied with smooth carbonation. It’s refreshing to find a smoked porter that has more than a hint of smoke in it. It almost had too much actually, though I do love it. larryLSB (193), La Selva Beach, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 8, 2009 On tap at the brewpub. Dark, almost black, with a medium tan head. Nose was heavy with smoke, roasted malt and as it warmed up bittersweet chocolate. Taste was smoky malt, dry to the finish. This was a very pleasant suprise on our visit. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 3, 2009 GABF 2008 - One of the first beers of the evening. Strong smokey nose, with some toffee and chocolate. Quite roasty with some of the smoke blowing off in the nose, and not carrying across terribly strong on the palate. Comes across very dry but still quite smooth, smokiness changes to gaminess in the finish. Nicely done. Zinister (1247), Houston, Texas, USA
