Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry and Blankboy, courtesy of Harry, many many thanks! Cray appearance - pitch black, big dark rich brown head with hints - really neat. Aroma featuring sweet rich malt, chocolate, some nuttiness, simply stunning. Taste is even better - so rich, roof of your mouth nuttiness, tons and tons of rich dark chocolate and roast. Alcohol, somehow, not really there. Silky full body. Quite incredible really, Harry picked up another bottle for me (thank you!!) which my wife and I will be sharing next week to celebrate our son’s first birthday - special occasion, special beer.

Tasted at RBWG. Thick black pour. Roasted grain, tobacco, chocolate malt and slight soy sauce aroma. Big roasted grain, chocolate and soy taste. Pungent and spicy and very over the top.

Black with a thin tan head that goes quickly to a light surface-covering/ring. Nose isn’t as boozy as 2.0, more sugary grape juice, milk chocolate, a wall of thick fudge, and light wood. The flavor also shows only light signs of alcohol, the flavor instead bringing heavy fudge, light licorice, more sugary fruit, and a cocoa note that continues to trail off forever in the lengthy finish. Coating and only faintly salty, this is very easy to put back. The 2.0 is arguably more complex at this point, but this is insanely drinkable given that the thin, sweet fruit notes balance the more decadent fudge tones. With no boozy warning, one must exercise caution or quickly end up on their ass.

Thanks to gypsy19 for sharing! ~Complex malty aroma with oak, getting some charred wood, light tar, dark fruit like prune and dark grapes, alcohol, brown sugar, very sweet scent. ~Pours jet black with small thin brown head that quickly disappears. ~Smoky bacon like flavor that is light but hits first. Tar, charred wood, big malt flavor, caramelly, prune, dark grapes, some chocolate and dark malts. ~Full bodied and a bit chewy, low CO2, malty burnt sweet finish. ~This is a big imperial stout. Lots of complexity in the malts. It is a great beer, but the flavors seem to be in the wrong places, if that makes any sense. Could use more coffee, i didnt detect any, that would help balance all the sweet malts.

500ml, Bottle #04473 at Olutkellari Helsinki, Finland Taste is rich and complex, with heavy cloying sweetness. Palate is filled with too much alcoholness.

500ml. Bottle 01742. From trade with thickfreakness. Pours a deep oily black with a small dark brown head which appears only briefly before dying out. Aroma is of very dark cherries and sweet dark winegrapes. Also caramel, brown sugar, and just plain old dark malt - tons of it. Flavor has huge smoke, tar, and leather at first and shortly thereafter the chocolate and espresso that I’ve been anticipating show up. Syrupy dark malt overwhelms from this point forward, all the way to the hot acidic ending. Pretty complex. Delicious? Yes of course, but see my final opinion below. High viscosity, low carbonation, sticky, cloying, chemical, nail polish remover finish. The chemical finish and aftertaste were a turnoff and quite unexpected from a brewery I normally consider freakishly virtuosic and rare genius in nature. I realize I’m in a tiny minority here but this simply doesn’t compare to the 2nd edition, which seemed as if it was touched by God himself. Just not enough non-sweet flavors to counterpoint/balance out the malt bomb. Verdict: A great beer, actually excellent by any definition, which I would enjoy anytime and anywhere if offered. I was just slightly let down however, for I was expecting this to be as good or possibly better (not scientifically possible it has now been proven) than the 2nd edition. All comparisons aside though, a damn good impy. Overall excellent.
