Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

The pucker is relatively weak, and there’s only a hint of barnyard tang. It’s a bit yogurty, but that’s a poor descriptor. All in all, it’s actually further from the norms of beer than most sours despite being less "sour." It’s not hard to drink at all. It’s fairly vinous but less so than a Flanders Red or something. There are strong notes of fruity, spicy wheat, no surprise with its high wheat content and coming from one of, if not the, best wheat beer breweries. My opinion of the beer is higher than my average score. It is not a nice looking beer. The head fizzes up and rapidly dissipates leaving no lacing and a cloudy overripe banana yellow glass. The smell is yogurt sourness mixed with spiced wheat with a metallic note. The flavor is very good. It’s refreshing and bizarre, at once. You can taste the lactic acid, but it’s very clean and not off-putting.

50cl bottle from Whole Foods (Tampa, FL). Pours a generally clear to lightly hazy bright yellow with clearly visible particulates. One finger white head settles quickly. Aroma is sweet and floral with notes of citrus, coriander, banana, honey, caramel, light funk. Flavor is sweet and floral with notes of crisp citrus, flowers, grain, yeast, wheat, spice, caramel, honey. Light to medium body with a crisp citrus finish.

Appears for all the world like a Belgian wit. Very cloudy yellow w/ a head of fizzy bubbles that lasts but a few seconds. Nose is banana and green apple and a twinge of lavender. A tart bit on the tongue is complimented by brisk carbonation. Finish is a bit watery. A larger dose of acidity would take this to a new level but as it is it’s basically a quaffable white ale w/ nothing to really make it distinct.

This is a classic Berliner Weiss. Has a lovely light golden color with a nice amount of carbonation to tickle the nose. The sour component is really medium which is more to my liking. Tried with raspberry syrup which did not work.

Cloudy pale blond color; creamy head. Peppery aroma, lightly citrusy too (lemongrass). Watery mouthfeel, light flavor, very light sourness. Not achieved.

Pours hazy golden yellow with a huge fizzy white head that disappears rather quickly. Lots of big bubbles of carbonation stream to the top of the glass. Very lively. The aroma is sour and a bit funky/musty with unripe fruit. Mostly lemons and peaches. Heavy bread yeast as well. The flavor is light, frothy, refreshing, and tart. Lemon, peaches, and oranges draw the mouth water with a nice bready yeast in the background. Napoleon and his troops said it perfectly, "Lively and elegant."

Bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. Pours a hazy orange-yellow-brown color that is hard to describe with a medium white head that dissipates after a minute or two and leaves a ring on the edge. Aroma of lemon, lactic acid, and wheat. The flavor follows suit- lemony, and wheaty, but the lactic flavor is a bit muted, so it’s not as tart as others in the style. Still really nice to drink. Medium bodied, wheaty and malty mouthfeel, with a refreshing citrus quality. Pretty cool beer, though maybe on the fringe of a Berliner Weisse.
