Muddy murky dark brown, little head. Smells of chocolate covered cherries, funky, vanilla, caramel malt, brown sugar, toffee. Taste of chocolate, toffee, espresso, brown sugar, very little hops, some barrel character, a slight spice or alcohol burn at the end. Nice malt flavors, complex, enjoyable sipper. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 2008 version. Dark brown with no head. Tobacco, wood, coconut, plums, prunes, alcohol, brown sugar/syrup. Full body, oily/sticky texture, flat carbonation, heavy sweet but has some tannins and alcohol to challenge the sweetness. Warming and heavy sipper.

Bottle at home on a cold and rainy spring night. 2011 Vintage. Pour is murky brown with a small tan head and decent lacing. Huge raisin, vanilla, roasted dates, oak, bread, oxidation, prunes, caramel, toffee, and deep bourbon notes in the aroma. Taste is caramelized sugars, raisins, grapes, tangy malt, charred wood, toffee, light earthiness, and cocoa with a light alcoholic burn on the backend. Slick/syrupy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Roasty, semi-sweet and moderately oxidized Barleywine. Not bad, but need to revisit fresh.

Very dark brown pour, thin tan head that fizzles away. Nose is whiskey, whiskey-soaked raisins, chocolate, lots and lots of chocolate. Taste is bourbon soaked chocolate with dark fruits, a hint of tartness to the finish that balances the sweetness superbly. Medium mouthfeel, sharp carbonation.

Dark molasses brown, dark for a barleywine. Honey and bitter coffee aroma. Terrific taste, things feel in perfect balance. Has this dark, rich, quadrupel-like thing going on. Reminds me a little of Bourbon County Barleywine. Fantastic!

Fantastic beer. 2009 release. The aroma is plum, raisin and caramel. The taste is similar and very balanced. Low carbonation.

375 ml 2011 bottle. Aroma is very rich with lots of dark chocolate and light roast. Strong dark caramel and toffee notes with treacle. Moderate raisin, prune and plum. Medium bourbon notes with light oak and vanilla. Moderately strong alcohol notes. Pours black with some dark brown highlights on the edges. Pours pretty much still so no head or lacing. Very long legs. Flavor is rich and sweet. Lots of chocolate and dark caramel with light roast, toasted bread and treacle. Faint smokiness. Moderate bourbon character with medium light oak and light vanilla. Medium bitterness. Light plum, raisin and prune. Moderately strong alcohol notes. Mouthfeel is fairly full bodied with pretty much no carbonation; this bottle pretty much highlights the Flat Abbey meme. Low astringency and moderate alcohol. Overall a really nice beer with great malt complexity. Even with age the alcohol from the bourbon barrels is a bit hot. The complete lack of carbonation also doesn’t help this beer; some low carbonation would be a big improvement.

A taste from a guests 375ml bottle @ "Bru Bar Vulkan", Oslo. April 18, 2014. Beer from a snifter glass Dark red to brown in color with almost no head and low carbonation. Aroma is malt, alcohol, vanilla, dark dried fruits and oak. Tastes a bit sweet with vanilla, oak and bourbon. The beer ends with a bit dry and alcohol taste in the finish. ABV is absolutely present, but not in a bad way.

Strong. Great aroma, but there is a slight sweetness that disappears as the bourbon and alcohol flavors race against the full flavors of the beer
