COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
East Coast Ale, is our South African inspired beer. Most of the year ShongweniValley and the nearby City of Durban are bathed in warm, sub-tropical sunshine, but we do get the odd surprise from Summer storms that refresh the air and make the bush grow again. The people of this area are exciting, diverse and full of energy and optimism. We wanted to capture this spirit of the East Coast in our beer and we think we have. East Coast Ale is a lively, refreshing, smooth, golden ale. We make East Coast Ale using a single malt variety and two kinds of hops, Brewers Gold and Challenger. Brewers Gold provides an excellent balanced bitterness especially when combined with a late aroma hop in golden beers. We achieve this using Challenger hops to give a crisp, fruity character, resulting in a beer with around 25 bitterness units and an ABV of 4%. This beer is fermented using a special ale yeast that imparts its own character to the beer.

Hazy golden colour with plenty of white head. Aroma of spice and straw. Flavour fairly sweet but with a good bitterness to balance. Overall a very nice ale. I last drank it several years ago, and it was great to revisit it.

500ml bottle: Pours a cloudy straw with a persistent white head. A hint of cloves on the nose. Spicy and fruity taste. Medium to high carbonation, medium to low body and slight astringency. Crisp. Bitterness is quite high. Overall a refreshing ale.

Shared bottle in Durban 16.03.15, with OEN and RS. Slightly hazy pale yellow. White head and lacing. Superb aroma of English golding or tergrt hops and fresh grass. Very fine taste as well, with fresh grass, flowerfields and tropical fruits.

Pours slightly cloudy, orange golden in colour with a white head that doesn’t last long. Aroma is of honey citrus notes and bready yeast with slight lambic hints. Taste is of grapefruit which is quite refreshing. The aftertaste is complex and surprisingly moreish; dry and medium bodied sweet malt comes through. There are hints of cardboard and metallic notes, just saying. Had in great company before a braai in Durban which made this special.

It’s a shame that there are such low reviews for this beer, I think it is largely due to a bottling problem, that seems to have been resolved (look for the new Robson’s labels). After having negative experiences with Robson’s beer in the past, I recently decided to give it a try again and WOW was I impressed. They boast a broad range of really tasty ales, the East Coast Ale being one of their best. Hoppy, easy drinking and golden in colour this is an awesome session beer.

Am not impressed with this brewery. My 3rd beer and I can now judge the brewery properly. This one was sour, barely no hops and just felt wrong. Not nice, will go for other SA breweries from now on.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein leicht trübes goldenes Bier mit ordentlicher Schaumkrone. Geruch hefig, malzig, hopfig. Geschmack leicht hefig, hopfig fruchtig, Citrus.
