COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Doppel Bock style of beer ranges from the round to the profound to the enveloping. In describing Bock beer, the term "single" Bock is never used. Just Bock. Nor is a Double Bock twice as strong. "Double" Bock is a very unGerman exaggeration. "Super Bock" might be a bit more accurate. Clearly, when this style was first developed, the idea was to exceed what had previously been the strongest type of beer.
This was finally achieved by the monks of St. Francis of Paula, who probably first made beer as "liquid bread" to be consumed at the time of Lent.
Ingredients: Pale 2 Row, Munich, Caramel, Cara Pilsner and Black malts, domestic Mt. Hood, Cascade and Centennial hops.
Available January through March.

Bottle courtesy of MatSciGuy. Pours copper brown with a tan head. Smells fruity with some vegetal hints. Tastes of chocolate, caramel, spicy, some earthy hints. Enjoyable.

Clear, dark carmel color. Good aroma of malt and sweet bread with dark shriveled fruits. Fairly complex flavor that balances well with aroma. Even a hint of bitter in the finish. I enjoyed this brew more than expected, and will certainly need to turn to it again, especially give the price.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2006 Rich color, just like a Doppelbock should have. Aroma is of semi-sweet malt, caramel, and a hint of alcohol. The flavor is an extension of the aroma, but add dried fruit, more malt, and some hops. The body was a bit thinner than other Doppelbocks I’ve had. For the most part, this one didn’t live up to my expectations, but maybe that’s because I can still remember what Ayinger Celebrator tastes like.

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2006 For some reason, I was expecting a little more sweetness since doppelboch has a BV rating of 65. Had a little more bitterness than expected but was not bitter per se. Very dark brownish orange in my three stooges glass. Over all not bad for a dark beer and the price.-------&# Concerniing my Schell variety case: I was very happy with my variety in the case from Schell; pale ale, octoberfest, pilsner, double boch, caramel boch, firebrick, maifest, doppelbock, zommerfest, etc. Wow what a variety…..loved it.-------- was about $1 per bottle from JR Beer Warehouse in Rochester PA.

Brown caramel color, malty caramel aroma with slight dried fruit side.Needs a bit more alcohol i think but it goes pretty well with a good malty taste some fruit making an appearance and a mild sweetness. The alcohol really doesn’t quite do it for me,needs to be kicked up a notch 1% or a bit more, and this would really get my vote.

An aroma consisting of yeast and prunes introduces this beer. It is a cinnamon colored beer that fails to produce a head. This beer enters the mouth in a nice thick manner producing a nice sweet date taste lingers well.

This brew gives off subtle complexities in the nose. Carmalized malts, cherries, fruits and alcohol pepperiness. Slightly metallic, but not to destracting. A bit whiskey-like with nice caramel malt flavors. Finishes peppery and warming. This is one of Schells best and I think the overall rating deserves better. A good dopplebock.

Doppel meaning double not single and yet not dubbel nor trippel, that of the liquid bread this, the task fo the monks of Saint Francis of Paula, sweet and profound, I do bend on one knee to thee.
