Commercial Description:
Bottled; Occasional.
Originally brewed as a one off to celebrate the opening of our new brewhouse and our new distribution centre, we have decided to repeat the beer again in 2009. It came first in its class at the 2008 World beer awards and has also won a Gold medal at the 2008 BBI (British Bottlers Institute) awards. The beer was created under the direction of our Chairman, Jonathan Adnams, whose instruction was to ‘Brew something to wow me’.
The beer, our version of an American IPA, is brewed with a blend of Wheat and Pale ale malts to give a spicy, biscuity undertone to the beer, but it is in the hops where the beer really shines. A blend of hops from England, Slovenia and America (namely Boadicea, Columbus and Stryian Goldings) combine to give a wonderful grapefruit and tropical fruit aroma and bitterness that is balanced by the sweetness of the barley.

[500ml bottle from brewery’s own shop, Southwold] Limited edition; bottle no. 5668. I baulked at the frightening price tag (£3.95) of this beer, but my wonderful wife sneaked out later and bought it for me as a gift. Adnams brewed this beer to celebrate them being the most environmentally friendly brewery in the known universe (or something to that effect). It therefore comes in a noticeably more lightweight bottle, boxed in recycled and rather grey-looking cardboard (and lets not mention that it would have been even more environmentally friendly had it not been boxed at all...) Pours a deep golden colour with a small head that dissipates quickly. Smell is intensely malty; initial taste is also malty but with that distinctive Adnams flavour. There are lime-y citrus notes in here, some herbiness and a hint of cut grass, before a deep bitterness cuts through everything. I wouldn’t normally like a beer this bitter, but it worked very well in this instance. Overall, this is an excellent beer, although not quite up to Adnams Explorer in my opinion. My only gripe was a slight syrup-y mouthfeel afterwards - possibly from the rather over-the-top strength. I would happily have it again were it not for the ridiculous price!

Bottle. A - Golden orange color with a decent sized, foamy off-white head. Recedes fairly quickly. Very limited lacing left over. Sl - Both malt and hop scents are full and jumping out of the glass. Good amount of citrus hops. Decent amount of caramel and apple. Candied fruit kind of smell. T - Nice balanced caramel malt and apple taste. Also a little honey. Faint hops (probably due to age). They provide a bit of citrus and pine/floral flavors. Had a caramel apple and autumn taste. Really well balanced as a whole between the caramel malt the fruitiness and the slight citrus. The caramel/apple dominate but the slight hop flavors come in at the end, usually on the back of the palate. M - Medium body with adequate carbonation. Quite smooth and somewhat drying. D - Superb aside from the ABV. It is very well balanced and goes down smooth. The problem is that it has more of a taste of a session lower ABV beer but the ABV is a bit too high to be that kind of beer. Notes: Ok so apparently my review may be slightly skewed in that it is an older bottle (reviewed in Feb. 2010), but the best buy on the neck says 06 Feb. 11, however other reviews say their best by was in 08, so take this for what it is worth. Would have loved to try this fresh as it is still good with a bit of age (albeit probably not what the brewer intended). Really good and balanced beer, but the ABV is a little high to be a session beer (although the alcohol taste is not present). All that said, like one of the reviewers before me said, this is quite possibly the last review of this beer. That is quite a shame. It was a good beer from a good brewery. If there are any odd bottles left over or they brew it again pick it up (although the odd bottles may be going bad sometime soon?).

The nose is lightly metallic and full of buzzy orange hops though an underlying toffee sweetness comes through. In the mouth it is quite full and bright. Fruity and lightly dry hops with some light soapiness and a cereal/biscuit finish accomapnied by a citrus dryness once more. A good one, though not one I could drink all night though I can’t quite put my finger on why.

Short lasting head on a light amber body. The aroma seems sweet with toffee and grapefruit. Taste is full and long lasting, don’t notice the alcohol, balanced well with the malt and hops not outdoing each other.

one of the best american IPA-esque beers brewed out side the US. I am pleased this is more available, it’s become more of an everyday beer. and, what makes me more happy is that it’s from one of our family brewers, having a go! good on ya! Sherbetty, citrus hops, little earthiness, lovely quaffable body, slightly rough raspy middle hops witha dry finish. cracking!

22nd October 2008. Clear gold beer. Fruity hops with grapefruit and orange equally balanced. The fruit much outweighs the little bitterness from the hops which is only noticeable at the finish. Light, crisp and refreshing.

0,5l bottle. Murky golden color, small head. Nose is refreshingly hoppy with a slight honeyish sweetness to it. Flavor is very nice with floral hops dominating the palate. Very well balanced.
