Sierra Nevada Early Spring Beer (ESB)

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our ESB blends the best of English tradition with the boldness of West Coast style. A blend of malts featuring British-grown Maris Otter is balanced with the earthy spiciness of hand-selected English and US hops. The ale is left unfiltered which enhances mouthfeel and hop aroma creating a slightly reddish copper hue.

From Mar 2008 This one pours a copper red with a 2 finger head of foam with some lacing. Great head retention. The smell is of pine and citrus and a bit of bread. The taste starts off with the pine and citrus hops but it's offset quickly by some malty notes most of which are bread. Interesting taste. It has a medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation, and it finishes quite bitter with a lot of pine. Very dry and a pretty good thirst quencher. Another solid brew from Sierra Nevada but, imo, it is certainly not an Extra Special Bitter and more of a variation of their Pale Ale.

Originally rated on 2/14/09. A slightly above average ESB, It poured a mis amber body, not much carbonation or head but it did leave some nice lace. Aroma were faint but there was mostly bready malts with a few hops. Flavor was similar to the aroma with the maltiness and a slight hop presence. Overall it was fairly decent.

Bottle. Golden colour. Very hoppy (spicy, peppery, resinous hops). Malty caramelly buttery base. Fruity (grapefruit-citrus and lemon). Bitter throughout. Dry bitter hoppy finish. Very drinkable. (2008)

"i kinda like the malts in this beer, but would prefer less spicy and more floral aromatic hops. otherwise, it’s an average beer...maybe slightly better..."

An average beer by Sierra’s standards. Earthy with subtle fruitiness. Plenty of grassy hops and a bit of citrus.

Smak och doft av malt och mycket humle med toner av örter och mörktbröd. Bra beska med mycket humlesmak.

I enjoyed the taste and nose. Balance was a bit off, but still decent. Not one of the Sierra Nevada’s I would regularly seeking out but I wouldn’t turn that subtle bing of spiciness on deliver with this brew.

Bricktop86 (2151) - Portland, Oregon, USA - APR 8, 2012
Dark golden to orange in color with an off white head. The smell is malts, floral, fruits, hops, and earthy. The taste is about the same as the smell.

Fylligare och starkare än SN pale ale. Annars är allt sig likt från detta citruskådabeska bryggeri. Vacker bärnstensfärg.

Pours a clear copper with the slightest of haze, with a head that bubbles up and settles at a healthy pace. Citric, piney American hops blend with bitter, mineral-laced British cousins, all coupled with a modestly fruit-tinged malt base. Sierra Nevada ESB creeps up on you; the flavors mingle and open up as the beer warms, making for a great little spring surprise. (2/3/09) NOTE: I wish Sierra Nevada would do two things: Make their Glissade Spring Seasonal their year-round lager, then return their proper Spring beer back to its home.
