Bottled served at a Stone Brewing dinner at the west Burnside Zupans (Portland, OR). Many thanks Micah and Peter! Colour...cloudy-dark Amber with garnet hues and a thin ecru head. Nose...burnt sugar, turbo ado syrup, date paste and steeped Zante currants. Palate...incredible booziness, hot, and volatile. There’s gobs of Muscavado sugar here and masisive medjool dates. Christmas pudding abounds and the hops mend nicely on the loooong finish!

[2/20/15] Draught at Stone Brewing World in Escondido. As Stone Guardian’s Slumber 2013. Deep amber color. Lovely aroma of bourbon, vanilla, malt, cookies, caramel and a boozy hint. Sweet flavor with malt, cookies, caramel, bourbon, vanilla, some bitter resinous hops and some alcohol. Rounded mouthfeel. A bit boozy and bitter. Very nice.

Bottle sent awhile ago. (Shane?) Thanks! A: Light mahogany color, creme colored head, legs. N: Bourbon, vanilla, oxidation, caramel, toffee, candied cherries, heavy hops - pineapple, pine, and peppercorn. Burnt brown sugar, marshmallow. T: Quite bitter, medium sweetness. M: Sticky, heavy body, big alcohol, fizzy biting carbonation. O: Big burly Old Guardian with some well-integrated bourbon characteristics. The underlying beer, however, is not tamed, so that’s either good or bad depending on perspective. I’m somewhere in the middle.

2014 bottle of Guardian Slumber. Pours brown, thin cream hued head that last. Strong nose of bourbon and toffee. Taste is sweet with caramel, toffee, vanilla, light oak, and a nice bourbon finish. Big burly body with a decent amount of booze burn.

2010 and 2011 vintages, 500 mL bottles from the brewery tasted side-by-side with the early 2010 base beer. Pours hazy orange-brown with a small, off-white head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves trace lace. The nose of each has huge bourbon, vanilla and molasses, with more oak, molasses and charred barrel on the elder vintage. Notes of figs and raisins come through as well, with more raisin in the younger. The flavour is moderately sweet with brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, oak and bourbon with a touch of smoke. Herbal hops are delicate and come through mostly on the back side. These develop into a resinous hop-molasses finish with lots of vanilla and bourbon. On the palate, both are medium-full in body with a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, wow, a truly amazing bourbon twist on a hoppy, sophisticated barley wine. The ’10 is smoother and more refined with more bourbon, while the ’11 retains more of the fruit from the original and has slightly more hops. The ’11 is a bit bolder and retains a bit more of the base’s punch while the ’11 is more of a sipper. Both are amazing. 2014-10-17
