Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

750 mL bottle. Dark brown-reddish pour with a nice tan head. Aroma of barnyard, Belgian yeast, malt and plums. Great taste of yeast, malts, dark fruits and caramel. Fantastic, slight alcohol finish.

2. Bouteille 330ml.

Bottle. A - Dark murky brown with a lot of sediment floating in this beer. Large light brown head with pretty good retention. S - Dark fruit and sugary smell upfront. Also some spices (Cinnamon and pepper). Along with the dark fruit there is some malty/caramel scents. T - Fairly sweet between the dark fruit, dark sugar, and malt. Balanced a bit by some of the spices in this beer. There is a bit of nuttiness to the taste as well. Alcohol is pretty well hidden although it gives off a fortified wine kind of taste. M - Probably would be medium bodied but relative to what I would expect it is a bit thin, decent carbonation though. D - Really tasty and would like to drink a couple of these. Only thing that is holding that off is the ABV, and that after 2 or 3 it might be a little sweet. Notes: Liquid alcoholic candy might be a little off (I don’t think it is that sweet), but that description wouldn’t be too off. A very nice Belgian.

(750ml bottle best by 12/17/2011) pours deep reddish amber with lasting head and great lacing. Nose of Belgian yeast, Candi sugar, brown sugar, apples, pears and other fruits. Taste of golden raisins, Candi/beet sugar, very bready/yeasty. Medium body, perfect carbonation and long sweet duration.

I had one of these several years ago and was unimpressed. So its brother sat in my cellar for several years, unappreciated. It turned into a malty, yeasty bomb that compares well with the likes of Rochefort 8 and Westvleteren 8. Delicious.

di un bellissimo colore rosso cupo,il suo aroma ricorda quello del vino, caldo e avvolgente, dal finale decisamente fruttato. sicuramente non è proprio la mia birra ideale,ma devo riconoscere che è una brra da provare assolutamente!

Deep blood red in colour with a stable, slightly off-white head. The aroma just bursts of peach fruitiness, dried fruits like figs and raisins and fumes of alcohol. The flavour is really malty, chocolatey and biscuity with a strong dark caramel backbone and a rather crisp, slightly roasty finish. Just tons of malts in this beer. The carbonation is soft, making it highly drinkable while maintaining a full palate. A really nice, classic belgian here.

33cl bottle. Hazy amber to brown color with lots of sediment and a creamy white head. Aroma has some dark sugar, lots of malt, some fruit and a touch of yeast. The taste is malty with some fruit and hop and a decent bitterness. The body is full and the mouthfeel is a little bit sticky. A very nice brew.
