Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle that was very kindly given to me by Craig, cheers mate. Consumed 22-12-08. Pours black with a beige head. This beer had a smoky nose in fact I would go further than that and say it was smoked mackerel which I also detected in the mouth. There is also a whiff of whisky on the aroma and this comes through in the mouth but its more subtle than you would expect. The mouthfeel is soft and creamy and there is a slight bitterness that carries, though this is subsumed by the general sweetness that is present in this beer. A7 A4 F7 P4 OV 15 3.7

Thanks to axilla for sharing this. Pours a deep brown with a medium creamy/bubbly tan head that left some lacing. Aroma of dark cherries, cocoa, molassess, light alcohol, oak and vanilla. Flavor was earthy, light smoke, woody, dark chocolate, some bitter notes and whisky.

Bottle, thanks to Beachbum25. Tried the 12, 16 and 30. The 12 poured a tiny head that was gone quickly. Color is almost jet black. Aromas are coffee, chocolate and toasted malt. Flavores are of whisky(bourbon and scotch), chocolate, coffee, toast. Carbonation is low and hops are barely noticeable except on back thirs of tongue. This one is better than the 16, but not as good as the 30.

Bottle. Pours black with a small, fizzy light brown head, somewhat lasting with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (molasses, roasted grain, chocolate), average hop (flowers, perfume), average yeast (leather) with notes of light alcohol, prune, wood, tar, and vanilla. Full bodied, alcoholic texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

September 2007 bottle number 03151. Pours with a brown creamy head covering a black body. Pours like motor oil. Some spider lacing. Aroma of vanilla, wood, coffee and whiskey. Strong oak in the taste aswell as porter style dry coffee. Some vanilla in the back aswell. Not nearly as complex as I was expecting. Creamy mouthfeel with light bubbles. Alcohol is well hidden in the taste. A bit too much wood in the taste, felt like I might get splinters from drinking this beer.
