I like this because is is more bitter and dry than sweet like some other Capital brews I’ve tried. I would happily drink again. nuplastikk (1367), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 11, 2009 12oz bottle. Filtered amber brown color with a small beige head. Medium bodied, some choco-toffee sweetness. Still has that macro aroma unfortunately. Some rich caramel tones as well. Certainly a step up from typical Capital swill, this one is actually flavorful and refreshing, as advertised...as for the finest dark beer in America, they must be out of their minds. No real hops to speak of besides the initial crispness. Nice and rich malt tones, that never get too sticky or overbearing. Lagered out and smooth, with solid specialty malt nuances. prosqtor (408), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 8, 2005 Pours to a huge frothy rocky off-white head. The body is a dark brown with red hilights. The aroma is alcoholic roasted sweet malts. Bread dough. The flavor is toffee, bread, and tea. Unfortunately, it’s a little weak. I get a light dry chalkyness too. Strange. Overall, a decent beer but comes off a little weak in the flavor dept. McKnizzle69 (89), Machesney Park, Illinois, USA

Sweet, very smooth on palate. Nice carbonation. Very dry finish with some hops. SpecialSauce (47), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 30, 2005 Pours copper color with thick slightly rocky head, smooth small-celled lacing. Smells of toasted hops and caramel. Velvety smooth, if a bit light in flavor. Caramel and malty notes appear as the beer warms in my glass. The head, though now thin, has lingered until the last drop. Moderately priced and supremely drinkable. norushjohnnie (19), Sister Bay, Wisconsin, USA

Flavor is chocolate and caramel that’s well balanced by the hops. not the cleanest finish, but everything else about this beer is excellent. Brigadier (1323), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA

It’s hard to believe I have had this so many times yet never rated it properly. Given that it is going to be tough to locate Capital outside of Wisconsin and Minnesota I picked up a single to remind me of home. After settling in I cracked it open on a cool fall evening. It was just as good as I remember; this is a nice standby beer for those lucky enough to be in the Madison/Milwaukee area.
Aroma / Appearance - Caramel, molasses and malt fill the air with a hint of coffee in the background. The overall impression reminds me of rye bread with raisins cooked into it. The reddish brown body let about half the light trickle through. Sitting on top was an off white short lived head.
Flavor / Palate - Rye bread, raisins and dark malts wash over the tongue on the first sip. Next comes day old coffee before a semidry finish. The mouthfeel is fluid and simple; nothing is hiding in the last sip that wasn’t there before. This is a nice easy going beer just as I would expect from Capital.
