Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Aroma of metal and roasted malt. The beer is dark with a brown head. Flavor is also malty and with a nice roasted flavor to it.

This was my first time ever having an oatmeal stout, and I have to say I am very impressed with this. Brown head, dark brown to black appearance. Smells great, malty with caramel and chocolate. The taste is great, oats, coffee, and fruits stand out, with a stout taste thrown in. Proper balance of watery and syrupy on the palate. The aftertaste was semi-sweet with the oats standing out. Overall, great beer, I will most definitely buy this again.

Dark brown, copper edges, massive foamy tan head builds over the top of the glass. Aroma of biscuity sweet malt, cream and chocolate. Taste is mild, nothing really stands out over anything else. Finish has a slight burnt malt/dark chocolate bitterness. Good balance, a little thinner than most stouts, soft carbonation.

Poured this beer into a pint glass to drink. The beer had a dark brown-black color with a big, creamy and bubbly dark tan head that had long retention and decent cling. Its aroma featured chocolate, caramel, the presence of oats, some earthy hops and a touch of vanilla and maybe coffee. The beer was sweet and flavorful with notes of chocolate, oats, and some vanilla, along with a slight grainy bitterness. It was a creamy, wetter beer with lower carbonation and a bit watery; slightly thinner on the palate. Overall a very good oatmeal stout.

Bottle (odd shape forces head if not poured carefully). Pours a deep brown/black with a nice frothy khaki head that has excellent retention. Smells slightly of cherry and oat, slight malty sweetness. The slight cherry is present in the flavor but the oats stand out. Touch of coffee flavor too. Medium body, slightly syrupy texture, low carbonation.

Pours opaque black (dark red highlights) with a tan lingering head from the 19oz. bottle: Aroma has lots of oats, roasted malts, chocolate and some mild spices. Roasted malts dominate the flavor with some oatmeal, lesser hints of vanilla, and dark fruit. Slightly sweet, exceptionally smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Medium bodied. Warming. Drinkability: Smooth. Rebuy: Yes. #259 on 28012010, DG.
