Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

55cl. Aroma is rich with roasted chocolate malt--lightly sweet and deep with very mild hop aromas. Caramel head quickly swallowed by the beer. Pleasantly sweet with a balanced bittern finish. It’s a bit viscous and has a very even and pleasing mouth feel. I don’t want it to end.

550ml bottle poured into my Samuel Smith pint glass... Very dark brown body with a creamy caramel-coloured head and some nice lacing. The aroma has got a good amount of roasted malts (but not over-roasted), with sweet chocolate and espresso beans notes. Some creamy oats, some floral notes. A touch of dark fruits (sultana raisins, prunes). Very intriguing. Wow, the taste is extremely well-balanced and flavourful! Starts out with some serious roasted coffee bean notes and milk chocolate, followed by an exceptional creaminess from the oats. Then you get some bitterness and sourness. The after-taste is slightly roasted and bitter-sweet, with a tiny bit of burnt malts. This definitely beats the other oatmeal stouts I’ve had! Medium-bodied, with some moderate carbonation. Exceptionally smooth, even creamy. The alcohol is not present at all. It goes down very smoothly and doesn’t get boring not overwhelming. This is one of the best stouts out there, and nothing is really compromised in this beer. You get enough of everything.

Bottle. A - Black with some mahogany hues on the edges. Large thick, creamy and foamy beige head. Good retention leaving a good lacing behind. S - Dark and milk chocolate along with some espresso and coffee notes. Some roasted malts, oats, nuts, and other earthy flavors. Some sugar smell too, more sweet/less roasted than many other stouts. T - Similar to the smell. A good amount of oat and grain taste, with a slight roasted taste. This goes along with an earthy taste. Good amount of chocolate and some coffee taste. Also a good amount of molasses/brown sugar. Slight herbal towards the finish. Ends with a definite oat taste, almost oat cookie like. M - Medium body with a good amount of carbonation. Very silky and smooth. A fair amount of chewiness, but not quite as much as I was expecting from an oatmeal stout. D - Very good drinkability. Smooth and goes down easy but also has a full mouthfeel. The taste is nice and doesn’t overpower. A bit of sweetness and bitterness. A good amount of oat taste. Notes: Very nice beer that isn’t as bitter as some other stouts but it has a good stout taste. Full oat taste, with a little roasted flavors, but not a lot of roasted taste. Good for a session or for a slightly special occasion.

Not bad. Aroma was kind of weak. Flavor was roasty chocolatey and malty but I noticed a very slight metallic taste (Some might not notice this). This beer felt very nice on the palate

bottle - Pours a dark black color with small off white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is fairly roasty, with notes of cream and ash. Flavor is malty, faintly roasty, touch of raisens and coconut and wet stone. Finish is balanced, with a touch of sweetness. Overall this is pretty good, definitely different, more minerally than others within the same style.

Dark dark brown, nearly black pour, with a dense, thick, tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma of lactose, bread, caramel, and roasted grain. Taste is well balanced, the sweetness comes through at the beginning with a nice sour and bitter tang at the end. An excellent example of the style, well done. You could probably live on this stuff if you had to.
