11% On tap @ Clybourn. 5oz pour. Boozy nose, lots of bourbon & oak. I really can’t smell anything else, which is one of the reasons I am not too keen on most bourbon barrel beers. Dark brown color with some red tints visible in the dimly lit bar. Back to the aroma, on subsequent smells, a bit of chocolately malt shows up before the bourbon overwelhms it. The taste is malty with rich chocolate and oakiness to start followed by a good amount of bourbon, vanilla, and oak, but it is not ALL the flavor. Really, it seems, the bourbon is part of the beer, not the beer. There are also flavors of bread crust, light earthy hops, and milk chocolate. Huge mouthfeel, but with a nice, balanced finish. It would seem GI is pretty good at the bourbon barrel thing.

Feb 12, 2010 Tasted at Extreme Beerfest. Dark amber/brown with a beige head. A huge, complete and well-rounded beer. Rich vanilla and hazelnut flavor with a cedar aroma. This beer sets a high bar for everything else at this Fest. Too bad we didn’t have a snifter.

Feb 10, 2010 Sampled at the 2010 Crescent Moon Extreme Beer Festival. Pours light brown with a medium beige head. Has a mild bourbon aroma. Nice balanced bourbon and coconut vanilla flavor. This is so well blended that nothing stands out. A near flawless work of art.

Feb 2, 2010 On tap at the Indiana Winterfest. Poured a slightly hazy golden brown with a yellowish brown head. Aroma was quite sweet with notes of caramel, biscuit and sweet alcohol. Flavor was a bit overly sweet with notes of biscuit, caramel and a touch of honey, with some alcohol at the finish.

Jan 24, 2010 Pours a cloudy nut brown with cream-tined foam. Aroma is largely bourbon/whiskey notes with strong alcohol notes coming through. A lot of vanilla in aroma. Flavor is a lot of bourbon and vanilla as well. Notes of raisin coming through. Body is creamy with light carbonation.

Jan 23, 2010 On draught at Winking Lizard, served in a snifter. The beer is a hazy brown color with a thin light beige head that disappears quickly. Small patches of lacing on the glass. The aroma is bourbon-forward with some roasted nuts and malt in the background. Medium body with a strong bourbon character and flavors of malt, dark fruit and vanilla. The finish is tart and fruity with a lingering bourbon aftertaste. Overall the beer is decent, although the bourbon needs to be ratcheted down some.

Jan 23, 2010 On tap at Winking Lizard. Pours a hazy brown with a thin soapy beige colored head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, caramel. Flavor is overwhelming bourbon, some malt, vanilla, oak. Palate is medium to thin, medium carbonation, finished sweet and boozy. Another over barrel aged, bourbon bomb. Not much in the way of balance here, dissapointing.

Jan 11, 2010 I guess this is different then the bottle version according to ratebeer, but I’m not really sure. On draught at the Wrigleyville Goose Island location. Pours a dark muddy reddish brown in a small sniffer. Noticeable alcohol upfront on the nose. Some sweetness. Caramel and apples on the aroma as well. TAste is mildly hoppy, sweet with toffee and cookie like flavas. Some bourbon all around in the mouthfeel. Plenty of malt in this beer, but an incredibly well balanced brew.

Jan 10, 2010 Tap, Muddy Pig. Pours a deep slightly hazy brown color with a nice minimal lacing. Aroma is alcohol and bourbon. Flavor is initally sweet and deeply malty, segways into notes of dark chocolate and bourbon with a finish of alcohol. Smooth on the palate with residual sugars. Solid and well made.
