Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

It finally made its way to San Diego! And it is everything I heard it was. Pours midnight black, with a short tan head. Rich, full aroma of choclate dipped in bourbon and wrapped in leather. The taste is soooooooo good. Chocolate and roasty malt topped with caramel. More bourbon and oak with hints of smoke, vanilla, and coffee. The prevalence of the alcohol only enhances the flavors. I love you Bourbon County Stout.

You can smell this a mile away. It is so overpowering with the taste and aroma of bourbon. It’s really not even a beer. Couldn’t finish the bottle. It’s syrupy with a coffee malt undertone.

12oz bottle. 2009 edition. Pours dark black with a very small head that immediately disappears. Smell is bourbon. Taste is bourbon. I don’t really like bourbon but somehow I do like this stout. Probably the best of any bourbon barrel aged anything I have tasted. Yet, because I am not a huge fan of bourbon I cannot rate it as high as it probably deserves. There are alot of complex flavors in there but the bourbon is so front and center that I cannot enjoy it as much as alot of the other impys out there. Plus, now that I have just drank 12 ounces, I need to go lay down...strong stuff.

Aroma is bourbon, wood, vanilla, caramel and anise. Flavor has notes of chocolate, bourbon, coffee and almond. finish is long and beautiful. The lasting impression is somewhere between molten chocolate cake and tiramisu, A very impressive stout.

250th rating. 12 ounce bottle from South Bay Drugs ($5.99). 2008 vintage -- I’ve been aging this one. Pours pitch black with really no head at all. Aroma is straight-up bourbon (almost stings the nose), campfire, molasses, and some vanilla. Wasn’t sure what to expect from the flavor with all the booze in the aroma, but wow. Flavor of campfire marshmallows, bourbon, rich dark chocolate, and wood. Great complexity and not overly sweet. Some alcohol burn in the finish. A really excellent impy stout -- reminds me somewhat of The Bruery’s Black Tuesday which is a very high compliment. (1255, 250)

Bottle. Black label - 2009. It’s a good thing I love bourbon. After pouring this coal black brew into a large ale glass, I could smell the bourbon from across the room. Then i took another wiff and got all that alcohol, bourbon cask and carmel malt. The is nary a hop to be detected in this brew. The key to enjoying this is to let it warm up a bit out of the fridge. The is brew is smooth and creamy and oh boy that bourbon bite is just wonderful. My only knock is the sweetness of the malt. It’s a little too much, but not really enough of a distraction. Overall this is outstanding. Once my wife gets over being pissed at me spending 13 dollars for one bottle, I will by more!

Big thanks to my SecretSanta wavers1 for this one. Bottle looks great as well as the beer in the glass. Wonderful complex-malty aroma. Starts wonderful strong and complex, intense notes of malt, liqourice and some chocloate. A little bit sweet in the background. Quite dry for a short moment. Long lasting finish, that burns more and more. Very well balanced. A beer to enjoy!

Looking forward to this one but a bit of a disappointment. Bottle pours very thick and black with thin tan head that disappears very quickly. Sweet bourbon aroma. Taste is not subtle at all with strong sweet heavy bourbon flavor. Palate flat, thick and syrupy. Not my cup of tea.

22 oz. bottle- Pours black with not a great head, pours decent, then disappears fast. I taste vanilla and oak and some Bourbon but not as much as you would think, the taste is great but not as good as Ivan the Terrible, no one can beat Ivan dammit. This is the beer I drank directly after Ivan the Terrible.
