Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

22oz bottle from sometime before spring 2008, #3 in our American Quad tasting. Pours a clear glowing amber with a fine frothy white head. Aroma is quite spicy, cinnamon, richly malty, reminds me of a doppelbock, oxidation is minimal, 7.5. Flavor is the same but a bit duller, the alcohol is unfortunately a bit too noticeable, the booziness thins and dulls the flavors out way too much, rich grassy malts, cinnamon, like the capital eisbock/doppelbock, the booziness really detracts from what seems like it could be an awesome beer. Medium bodied, thinner feeling, nice soft fizzy sizzling carbonation, softly nutty.

Thanks 17thfloor for sharing . Pours a deep golden red with a small off white head. Aroma is very biscuity and malty, lots of doughy character with a spiciness that’s slight but present. A decent dark fruitiness resides in my nose. Flavor is much like a sweet bread, lacking a lot of complexity as the sweet malts reign supreme. Not cloyingly sweet as some spicy hops come out towards the finish but stays sweet through the finish. Medium slightly sticky body and a soft carbonation. Not bad, not too complex but fairly easy drinking.

Bottle. Pour was golden brown with a nice aroma of fruit, sweet malt, caramel, light toast and spice. Flavors were well blended and on the sweeter side with a nice nutty malt character, medium fruity ester notes, and a nice alcoholic finish. Very well balanced and a nice beer to drink anytime. This is worth a try.

Bottle from Total Wine. Deep amber beer with a medium sized white head. Aroma of over-ripe plums and brown sugar. A lot of flavor going on here...Sweet candy on the start, mellows to a sour cherry flavor that really permeates your tongue and ends with a sour alcohol finish. Interesting flavors but a bit too sour overall.

(bomber from Coaltrain in Colorado Springs). Clear copper color. Medium off white head, which is mostly diminishing. Fruity aroma of pear, apricot, and fig. Sweet candy and bread flavors, with light fruit. Long duration. Alcohol finish. Slick texture. Moderate carbonation.

Smells of lightly soured bread and macerated pear. Flavor is less robust and less complex than any quad that I’ve had but it does stand out as being exceptionally clean tasting (if not a little sweet). Taste is very sweet in a simple way like lightly toasted malts but plenty of them. There is a slight alcohol presence only at the end to kiss you goodbye. Strange thing this bugger is. It’s easy drinking and overtly sweet like an English barleywine cut with spring water. Silky mouthfeel. Thank You Avery. 2009 22oz.

botle at the beer bistro. Huge arma of ripe fruits, loads of plums, figs, apples, and a boat load of sweet sugars, and sweet bready malts. This is just a sugar bomb, really not much balance. A real sipper. the booze comes through in the finish, and really attacks along with the cloying swetness. Not a bad beer if you are looking for something to sip for desert, but it doesnt even come close to a real quad.

I tried this beer on January 6, 2010 at ’The Beerbistro’ in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This is my first beer of 2010. The beer poured a semi-translucent orange brown with a thin tan coloured head...very light for a Quad. The aroma was very weak, but did have some malt and yeast. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, and mildly carbonated. The flavour was sweet malt, sugar, yeast, and plums. A good beer, but not in the same class as Trappist/Belgian quads
