Soft, ruddy copper-brown in color. Color thins at the edges. Medium-tan head, rocky and uneven, mostly diminishing. Decent lacing-- sticky but blotchy. Nose is a bit metallic-- copper and a touch malty beneath-- not a good sign. Some golden raisin and faint caramel in there. Some English barleywine features with the subtle dried apricot and raisin nose. Taste is much better-- some butter toffee, butterscotch, dark caramel, soft bitterness, really dark dried fruit. Very lightly hazy and softly fizzy finish. "Amber" malt and some medium caramel, really fun shades of dark butterscotch that I keep fighting for. Full body with gentle carbonation thatis barely holding up the beer. It’s barely good any more, but it’s still fairly solid. Faint chocolate and dark, biscuity, bread crust notes in the finish. A bit of sappy residue-- sticky lips and a slight tingle. I like the finish quite a bit, and it tastes pretty interesting. I just wish I could get more (and different) excitement out of the nose. I’d like to try this without such rigorous aging. The metal aroma fades after the first few minutes-- thankfully-- but it still smells and tastes a bit soggy. Like the malt has gone past its peak.

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 12, 2010 Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a lightly hazy copper color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Hoppy citrus hop aroma with caramel and toffee. Taste is leafy and slightly vegetal hops with a caramel backbone and some unexpected fruity notes, including pear, peach and melon. Medium bodied. Alcohol hidden well. Not the best barleywine. drfabulous (1340), Columbia, Missouri, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 18, 2009 In short: A slightly problematic but well hopped barley wine. Bad bottle?
How: Bottle. Age unknown. Tasting session with Montreal crew.
The look: Cloudy redish-brown with almost no head
In long: Strange “organic” nose. Body has a good amount of caramel but also notes of meat and blood. Weird. Very sweet but it almost goes unnoticed thanks to a generous amount of hops. Limited fruity notes, if any. Lifeless carbonation and body. My drinking partners were less than thrilled about this bottle. The beer had problems but I like hoppy barley wine so I didn’t think it was so bad. With the lifeless body and meaty/blood flavours that I noted I’m assuming that this was a problematic (or old?) bottle. This one definitely requires another try. I don’t know if I’m supposed to hate it or like it, like seeing an endangered animal eating an endangered plant.

(Rating #2649) MartinT (5138), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Aug 31, 2009 My Bottom Line:
Fruity caramel malts topple cheesy wooden hops in this nearly flat, withered Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is no head whatsoever atop the hazy red.
-The decent hop bitterness was wooden and leafy.
-There was no complexity at all in here, on top of it being a tad tired. Quite boring for was is meant to be a serious sipper.
-The fruitiness was not really defined.

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jun 25, 2009 25 oz bottle. Pours a clear copper to amber body with a minimal fizzy beige head that completely vanished. The nose is big caramel maltiness with just a little toffee. Some light resiny hops and noticable alcohol, a little earthiness. The malt lacks any complexity at all on the flavor, it’s just super sweet brown sugar and caramel through and through. The minimal hopping doesn’t help. The alcohol is pretty well hidden at least. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a fairly limp, lifeless, almost syrupy feel. Very minimal soft carbonation. This just didn’t do anything for me other than give me a pleasant buzz. JaBier (1518), Capital City, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 23, 2009 Bottle shared by Dogbrick. Clear red pour with no head. Malty aroma with caramel and fruit with a bit of hops. Caramel malt flavor up front with subtle hops for a dry finish. Good for a b-wine because it’s sweet but not too sweet.
