Beer tasted at mcbackus tasting courtesy of hopscotch. Pours murky brown with copper edges and small off white head. The aroma is dark fruity esters and rip cherries to go along with mild earthiness. Near the end of the draw some vague acidity is noticed. The taste is very much the same starting with tartness and acidity quickly turning toward malts, dark fruity esters and fresh ripe cherries. Toward the finish fruit tannins and astringency show up to pull in the sweetness with a mild wave of dryness. Pretty nice brew. But this certainly could be clocked in at 10.001% ABV, right?

A couple drafts in honor of the release on tap at the brewery. What a gem! Pours a nicely hazed dark brown with some nice off white head action that does its job lacing (Despite the plastic cups). Aromas are spicy, cardamom and dark fruits majority rule. Initial taste is similar, mixing raisins and a nice mellow sweetness (Honey and Caramel) no where close to cloying with belgian yeasty spiciness. Surprisingly smooth for the alcohol content, which hides well among the sweet nectar that is this brew. This is a special beer and I look forward to aging my bottle to get a different perspective on this bad boy. Drew was far too "modest" in his rating.

Just missed out on the bottles, but I got to sample it on tap. Pours a great dark murky brown. Aroma is very spicey, I like the cardamom. There was also a bit of honey, sweet malts, fruit. Flavor is sweet and spicey, bordering on cloying. Bready, banana, cinnamon, citrus. However, the cardamom is really the star here. I can’t imagine how good this would be with some spicy Indian food. Would love to try it again, and am a bit bummed I couldn’t pick up some bottles.

22oz bottle from drewbeerme, thanks Andrew. Rating #68. Nice looking brew, brownish/red, but with more red and a light tan head. Sweet aroma, rum soaked raisins comes to mind, might be the cardamom, very nice though. Flavor was a little different from the aroma, not quite as good, more raisins though they come through right up front, very interesting and pretty good. (1123)

Sampled at the January ’10 Metro Detroit tasting. Thanks to whoever brought this. Poured a clear orange with an off-white head. Aroma was full of spices with notes of caramel, sugar, orange blossom and a hint of raisins. Flavor was well balanced with the spices, caramel and sugar. Went down quite smooth.

Since we’ve only a stunted commercial description here (as opposed to what’s on the bottle), I’ll mention that this was brewed by Matt Van Wyk at Flossmoor Station in collaboration (Get it?) with Todd Ashman of FiftyFifty and Zac Treimert of Lucky Bucket. I’m rating from a bottle autographed by label artist frankenkitty (too bad we’re sillily not allowed to do links within the site from the ratings pages) procured for me by the inevitable dm9831 (who hates being pointed at). It poured a slightly hazed cola-brown with a slender head that died quickly. The heavy spicing along with the dark fruitiness and molasses scents make for an almost medicinal aroma. All blends well in the flavor, like a spiced up raisin bread with banana slices and honey along with some orange zest. (I eat that every Easter.) The alcohol remains well hidden until it gets into the veins. I really think this one’s going to age well and look forward to popping the bottle that I laid down next Christmas. Nice job by Matt, Todd, and Zac.
