(Rating #2664)

Black appearance, opaque, excellent lacing with a creamy brown head. Aroma: black liquorice, absinthe, cumin, star anise and salt. Flavor: black liquorice, burnt malt, coffee and chocolat. Palate: medium to full body, soft carbonation, sticky with a dry chalky finish.

Draught. Mondiale 2009 - day 2. Opaque black pour with a solid creamy light brown head. Aroma of licorice, deep near-burnt roast chocolate malt and some herbal bitterness. The taste - erm, not my thing - licorice, alcohol, background deep roast malt but mostly a pungently bitter herbal taste that I assume 1) is absinthe which leads me to 2) I don’t LIKE absinthe. Certainly thick-bodied, though, very bitter mouthfeel, but quite under-carbonated, and that absinthe really sticks around a long, long time (I had to get another sample of something to cleanse my palate). I really, REALLY love the underlying stout here, but the absinthe really took points off my ability to enjoy it properly.

On tap at the brewery, pitch black color, with a tan-colored head, nice roasted, chocolate malt, absinth, licorice nose, with a minty, chocolatey, herbal fennel accent and a spicy anise note, and a faint black coffe aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, toasty, black, chocolate malt, absinth, anise, licorice character, with a faint mochaish, chocolate ice cream, cappuccino, flowery hop minty leafy flavor, with a light spearmint spiciness, leading towards a chocolatey, spicy absinth, lingering roasty bitterness finish.

[2232-20090605] Tap. Strong anise aroma, lots and lots of licorice. Black body with a long-lasting creamy brown head. Heavy ouzo booze flavour, all roast. Full body. Way too overpowering in an unpleasant way.

Draught at ’Mondial de la Biere 2009’, Montréal, QC. Pours black with an average size diminishing creamy beige head. Aroma and flavour has lots of licorice along with coffee, chocolate, roasted malt and herbal hops. Average bodied. An interesting beer, I enjoyed it.

A deep dark stout with a thin dark moka head. A light licorice aroma, with chocolate and coffee. In mouth, Pernod meets a rich stout, with chocolate mint. A very happy mix. On tap at Mondiale 2009.

Dark black beer. Thin brown head. The aroma is loaded with big, bright aniseed character. A bit of chocolate and cocoa as well. The licorice and aniseed works very well with the heavily roasted malt character. Sort of a strong pastis character with a huge roasty finish. Herbal/licorice bitterness. Really solid and unique brew.
